You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
After 3 weeks of the poor thing sitting well-covered outside, I brought the above-mentioned bike in to set on the turbo trainer only to find that the bb had seized solid.
Now I am trying to figure out which bb it needs, and am confronted by the fact that the be is not specified in the Trek literature, and the one place I found it ( here - pages 189 and 190 ), lists two different models with two different sizes.
Beyond that, I can find no mention of separate models anywhere, especially not with a 'd' or 't' designation, yet getting the right part depends on me knowing. Or of course just pulling the old one and measuring it.
But is there any chance you can shed some light on the mystery?
D is double chainset- 68x108mm
T is triple chains - 68x118mm
A Shimano UN55 doesn't cost much and should last a good while.
They do a 68x118, but not 68x108. They do either 68x107 or 68x110 - both will work. 107 will knock 0.5mm off your chainline, 110 will add 1mm.
Pedal it and it will free up and work for ages

Really? I should just force it?
Just got home, and the answer to my own question is: yes. Forcing works.
I have nothing useful to offer, I'm just enjoying the nostalgia- one of those was my first 'expensive' bike and I had it until someone nicked it from the garage a couple of years ago
