I just bought a XT bb for £18 from merlin, seems best balance of cost/durability

XT seems just as good as XTR to me- they're built slightly different but both last decently.

Unhelpfully, have another option- Gusset's EXT24. Long-lived, more so if you give them a wee clean and grease from time to time, and uses standard bearings which are easy to swap.

XT from Merlin or XTR from Rose bikes - cheap and reliable

Hope from Wiggle. Seriously the Shimano ones last all of 5 mins. Will be cheaper in the long run and more bling!

It's not really relevant, if unreliable, and surely there isn't much in it if it's HT2, couple of bearings and alloy cups, with a sleeve in the middle.

XT or XTR. Both have gone on forever for me.

If you're one of those people that mysteriously destroy them. If you're one of the rest of us, they're not bad at all. PS, Hope are really good at surviving overtorquing, this is no doubt purely coincidental.

I get one year out of XTR press fit. Three years so far out of Chris King, and still going strong. Wrecked an FSA after 25hrs use...
My big bike had a UN72, now a UN74 square taper, the second one is still perfect, not bad for 14yrs between them.
.
I'd go for CK if it much be HT11, bit pricier but last the longest.

I have to agree with north wind to much preload kills things very quickly
That plastic cap does not need to be done up as right as you can.

Another vote for Hope - been running the same set of bearings since June 2012 and maybe greased them 3 times - no issues at all after 2 very soggy winters
