You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Yeah I know there's billions of threads and everyone has an opinion based on their experiences.
However, I'm in Australia so the usual Trouty / Torchy / Smudge sellers probably wouldn't get to me - they have strange rules about posting batteries within Oz.
I'm quite happy to purchase decent batteries and build a pack but just need to know what to go for and what charger. I don't *need* waterproof batteries (it's spring here and 37c) but I guess if they don't cost the earth it wouldn't be a huge issue.
I do have a Xeccon light and a 6600 battery pack and charger which lasts well and doesn't appear to heat up excessively which I could use but I fancy having a crack at "building" a pack.
*tumbleweeeeeed*
Don't think there that many ppl about who are willing to 'mess' with battery pack TBH, yes lots of ppl have tinkered building the lights but not the actual batteries to my knowledge. When I've looked at thread about batteries in general.. it's a minefield of issues about balanced cell and protection circuits but I have no back ground or real interest in the technical details of this field.
If you really do want to go down this path, I'd suggest you have a browse of the MTBR "lights & night riding" and "Lights DIY" forums. Also I was pointed towards Budgetlightforum for some slightly indepth info on actual lights, they do seem to have lots of very informed ppl on there & lots of sub-forums covering a multitude of topics including batteries.
In all honest, I can't see why you either not just buy a decent battery (it must be possible) or use one of these Battery packs, and source some 18650 batteries and a charger locally, unless you a more than passing interest in the technical details.
Actually the obvious person to talk to is Smudge/Mark of MTB Batteries, try dropping him a mail for 'pointers' - being in Australia he shouldn't feel you looking to become a competitor! He does get busy, as he is running a small business afterall, and might not be prompt in replying but should very more helpful if he can (IME)
Why not use camcorder batteries (make sure they are 7.4 Volt) and make up a lead with a 5.5 x 2.1mm connector. All the protection is built in.
2 or 3 of THESE soldered in parallel should suffice.
Charger like THIS
All you have to do is find the Oz equivalent.
