Obviously 'attainable' has different parameters for different people, but if I can ever afford it, I just keep coming back to this. What's yours?

Although, a Pinion geared bike may take over in the lust stakes

One of those Atherton 150mm trail / enduro ish frames. Although I’d go custom geometry and slacken the head angle a bit / shorten the seat tube / slightly lengthen the chainstays. Essentially replicating my Transition Sentinel alloy geometry but with a slightly longer reach and a bit light. All my build kit would swap over fine onto it.

I just want to live somewhere with mountains, lifts and quality trails. Then I'll happily ride any crappy bike I can get my hands on.

The best bike on earth would just be a dust collector in my garage on Plague Island.

You know what, I think I've pretty much got my attainable 2x dream MTB garage already.

That's a pinion gearbox, belt drive titanium 150mm hardtail, with carbon wheels, and a Geometron G1 with carbon wheels, wireless shifting, and probably the best suspension out there (within a reasonable budget).

The only thing I'd change is an upgrade to tech 4's on the hardtail and a 240mm Rockshox Reverb AXS, if it ever comes into existence.

*looks in garage*

Yeah, them. Will probably ditch the fast road bike, mind.

Be a couple of years before I start shopping for bikes/frames again. But it’ll probably be an Atherton AM170, based on what’s available now.

Yep I did find a reasonably priced frame in the eu unfortunately only in a M and I’m 6ft 1.8inches, probably be a terrible mistake to get it , nothing worse than buying a nice frame as it was a fantastic offer but too small 🙁

I’ve my eye on the new 3t Racemax frames and the hope 130 but I’ve also got a urge for a sur-ron.

An absolutely top end road bike - off the shelf it'd probably be a Specialized Aethos or Tarmac* with full Dura Ace, couple of sets of wheels.

But I'd want to live somewhere worth riding it like southern Spain or the Alps. Switzerland has pristine roads, that'd be high up the list.

* I know, it's not exactly imaginative...

Due to some good luck recently I could buy a posh bike. But so far haven’t felt the urge

But not worrying about the price of tyres, cassette etc. is priceless

But if I do get the urge I’ll be looking at Argetheton 130

another vote for the Spur, a Starling Beady Little Eye with gears, Kingdom Void or an Orange Stage Evo. Basically a nice short travel 29er would be my dream bike.

I don't think (currently) I would replace my Stooge Mk4. It's an amaxing bike 😎

Hmmm, maybe one in Ti?

However, if funds allowed I'd add a few bits - a Kindernay gearbox hub and maybe some Cane Creek Ti cranks spring to mind 😁

I nearly did it but the pandemic put paid to it- I love my Trek Remedy 29 but it's a little short, a little steep, and can't take a really long dropper. Best rear suspension I've ever had. So I was looking at getting a new front triangle built to update all the bits I don't like but keep the rear end. The bits I have on it are already pretty superb so that'd make for a sensible everyday superbike.

Had a Flare for a while. One of the older 650b not Max versions. Didn’t get on with it tbh but think it was more to do with the X-Fusion Fork and shock. Just felt a bit dead.

I’d just like more time to ride the ones I have - in between running my own business, having three small children and a wife I like to spend time with, and now trying to get another band going, there isn’t enough time left for enough MTBing. I’m having to become one of those weirdos who gets up early to get a proper ride in before work and turns up covered in mud!

Also I’m a big fan of rocky natural trails and there’s not enough of that in SE England, so more time to visit them would be good. Just time please!

If I had the time (and space) then I’d probably want to add a middling travel 29” full-sus to fit between my 160/157mm e-full-sus and my 160/0mm singlespeed hardtail. Something aluminium (or steel) with 160mm up front, 130-140mm out back, similar geometry to my Moxie (long) and with space for a long dropper post and big water bottle. Maybe something that can mullet happily for uplift days. No idea what though, need more time to enjoy my two lovely bikes!

Oh yeah, I want a titanium fatbike. Not for any good reason, my alu fatbike is fab (and glows in the dark, which is frickin awesome), I just like looking at titanium more. Like, I could walk across teh room right now and go oooooooooooh, titanium. And it'd add like +7 to my beardiness stat.

Attainable in that it exists, would come to double (at least) what my current bike cost.

Last asco
Top level pike and superdeluxe *
Hope pro4/reserve 30 rims/berd spokes
Hope e4
Full xx1 axs and ax’s reverb.

*everything here could be built by the well funded amateur. But I’m also keen to try the flight attendant set up. Only available on full bikes afaik.

Kinda moved beyond this kind of thing nowadays. I'd be quite interested in building up a Fearless Warlock frameset with as many UK components as possible. It's attainable.

TBH most bikes are wasted on people, if your any good people start giving you them.
(Or are enough of a social medi fluencer)

If you like the bike and and it makes you happy whilst riding and gets you out on it then it’s a win. It’s the motivational aspect.

Between my Spur, Madonna & Rail, I’m pretty happy with all the bases covered for the moment. Waiting patiently for the new Rail to show up with the integrated Bosch system, rather than the stuck on Knox controller, but otherwise, no real desires for anything else leg powered.

I do really want one of these though. This would be fun!

Cheaper than a chunk of ebikes too 😆

Currently looking at this and trying to figure out what engine would be reliable enough and light enough to build an epic rally bike from.

Figure it fits the criteria as it's more attainable performance than a CRF450 or CR500 conversion 🤣

The linkage on that Coal bike up there ruins it for me. Needs some holes in it, it seems to big for the rest of the tubing. Other than that it's lovely and would be on my list. Along with a Cotic FlareMax or something like that.

That said, I'd be happy with some fancy wheels, Lyrik Ulitimates or Fox 36's, Hope cranks, XTR gears and Magura MT7 brakes on my Nukeproof Reactor.

I would want 2 bikes. I would want a 120mm full suspension bike for trails and a 160mm bike for big days and holidays. I used to do this but then I went middle ground at 140mm for everything an Im not sure that was the right thing to do in hind sight

I pretty much have the pedal bikes I want, but I might change my Orange Stage 4 for a Stage Evo, just to get a couple of minor geometry benefits.

My Starling is the closest thing to a "dream bike" I've had for years. It's lovely.

So if I had (more than) a few quid spare, I'd probably get an eeb. The Kenevo SL and Trek EXE both look like they'd suit my riding.

As a few others, I probably already have it/them. A Starling Murmur and Cotic Solaris.

I'd like to upgrade the bouncy bits of the Starling and may well do at some point but wouldn't change the frame (unless it was for the SS version).

As others I'm lucky enough to own one of my dream bikes - 2022 Nukeproof Mega 290 Carbon Elite.
Also have a V1 Nukeproof Scout 275 - but would probably upgrade that if I had the cash to something steel - Cotic, Stanton etc.

I honestly don't care these days. I've moved on from studying various details of brands and bikes. They're all good these days.

I would (and do) have several bikes of different types, and if I were rich I'd by fancy ones - in no particular order

- Aggressive trail
- Downcountry
- XC race
- Rigid adventure
- Endurance road
- Fast road*
- TT*
- Track bike
- Fat bike
- Gravel bike

* I may not race these, I'd just be curious as to what they were like to ride.

Well, I kinda had them.

27.5 Lynskey Ti full susser
26" Zaskar LE with full xtr and SID Race

both nicked from my house on the same night. Unbelievably gutting. 2 quite rare and unique bikes here in Western Aus and very annoyed they both went.

Pretty much my thinking too. I bought my dream-yet-attainable bike last year (Transition Spur) and it fits 90% of the type of riding I enjoy (XC/Trail) but if money and space weren't a problem then I would love some sort of rare and beautiful long travel enduro bike like that Contra MC above, a Curtis XR29, Nikolai Saturn 16 etc for that one week a year when I get to ride big mountains.

I have a custom steel FS frame from Morph which has been amazing so far. 140mm/140mm Mullet, its a blast. If I had more money I would go the route of Actofive and their CNC'd Ptrain and just maybe the Voima as my side ebike.

RM Element is still perfect for me. But I'd probably get some motorised contraption (not like those shitty irrelevant petrol things on the previous page) in reality. Cos I is old and shagged.

Fairlight Strael to replace the perfectly adequate Defy I have. BTR Ranger hardtail before he rage quits and stops making them. Full suss is trickier as I havnt really ridden one for ages but would love to try a tricked out Cotic, Mojo Geometron or a Starling to see what the fuss is about.

I'd have three or four

A pinion ti fat bike - Smokestone ti-pin to my geo, fully rigid.

A 130/150mm travel 'downcountry' bike, possibly carbon wasp or more likely a Huhn

And then an ebike of some kind, possibly a propane Ekano.

Finally a Sturdy cycles gravel bike complete with ti fork, bar and cranks.

BTDT. I bought my dream bike a couple of years ago, top of the range S-Works Epic.

Sold it after a year. It felt uncomfortable using something so expensive, and got a lot of judgemental looks and comments at events.

Now I just have a reasonably well-equipped but discreet road bike and get a lot more enjoyment out of riding.

Attainable dream bike for me would be a decent road bike - carbon, Endurance geometry but pretty sporty/aero, 50mm carbon wheels, Ultegra Di2, etc.
Basso Diamante SV appeals to me at the moment...

Very fortunate to have mine already 😀 The Spur is perfect for me, it's fast, fun and it's been rock solid in 2 and a bit years of ownership. I'd like it to have the SRAM UDH for ease and futureproofing though. XX1 rather than GX AXS would be nice, as would a Reverb AXS, but otherwise, it's all there already 😎

Probably a custom sized Sarto Road bike - either a Seta or Asola please, with a custom green/blue/purple flip paint job, and full Campag obviously. Then preferably a house in Tuscany or the South of France and the warm weather to ride it in.

Oh, you mean MTB's? Probably a Transition Spur or a SC Blurr TR

Would prob start with the commuter tbh - bike I ride every day, love the headspace of the ride. Just that dream bike doesn't easily square with the workmanlike aspects of an urban commute. I do at least keep the bike in my office though, so whatever the awesome version of a dolan precursa is would be nice - with a very strong, very light, very expensive wheelset.

Wouldn't change from the three I've got, fancier wheels to drop a bit of rotational weight.
-Kenevo SL
-Geometron G1
-Stumpy (one with flex stays)

I look at new bikes being released and nothing will come close.

Actually, my choices of super-expensive lightweight eebs are among the most expensive bikes on the market, do they count as "attainable"?

They're not for me, but they obviously are for some on this forum.

Have we defined what we're classing as "unattainable"? Or does it just mean something you could maybe justify buying, and afford to do so, if you really wanted?

I always wanted a nice clean raw finished Ti road/gravel bike like a Moots or something, so one of them maybe.

For MTB again it would be something clean and raw like this
