Since forever I've always worn lycra 'cycling shorts' with a chamois pad, but especially at the moment it's bloody warm for all that, so I've just been wearing my usual cotton briefs, which are nice, until they get all sweaty and start trying to cut my legs off at the crotch.
I wear endura bike boxers, which are a nice middle ground,
Also have a pair ot troy lee shorts that came with a sort of mesh liner, which is a fair bit lighter than lycra
They look perfect, thanks.
Haven't worn Lycra for ages. In Queensland it's always too hot, but then I only get chafing from chamois. Howie's merino boxers are good. Did back to back days of 80km of single-track recently with no issues whatsoever.
I have a couple of pairs of these
They come down the leg quite far so don't ride up , basically lycra shorts without the padding . I wear them under baggys when I'm out with the kids for a couple of hours and are comfy enough.
I have also just got some bawbag sport I think their called which are very comfortable but I haven't worn them on the bike yet
nothing. as in I don't usally wear baggies anymore, just bib shorts. just go full lycra, you'll find its fine
I just wear stretchy synthetic boxer shorts, not ones made specifically for sport or cycling. Never wear lycra or passed shorts. Cotton or wool hold onto too much sweat.
I need the padded shorts so I’m still wearing Lycra under padded shorts for mtb.
Just wear Lycra on my road bike and it’s far cooler but I can’t bring myself to mtb in full Lycra for some reason.
I like DHB Aeron waist shorts mostly - but on my upcoming trip I’m going to have to use my endura fs260 bibs one day as I’ve not got enough decent waist shorts for 3 days in a row.
I’ve been wearing standard stretchy cotton undies, with a liberal slather of chammy cream when it’s proper hot. The cream really helps stop chafing.
Nothing.
I don't understand why people wear undergarments at any time, ever - never mind when sweaty-ball cycling.
Someone once said to me "to stop skid marks", to which I replied "don't you know how to wipe your arse?"
Anyway. Happy to do all-day rides with no unders. Never get chafing. Never get sores. Bottom is baby-smooth.
I honestly think people wear underwear because their parents made them, so they feel weird without it. But kids shit their pants, not adults.
Cotton boxers. But my twurnt feels no pain unless ride is > 4-5 hr
nothing. as in I don’t usally wear baggies anymore, just bib shorts. just go full lycra, you’ll find its fine
I'm 41 and gloriously over-weight, no one wants to see that.
Nothing.

Again, middle aged, if I didn't wear undergarments, I'd have to tuck my knackers in my socks.
I did ride commando once, kept bashing everything whilst manoeuvring around the saddle 😂 Probably the fault of my enormous package; glad to hear you don't have that problem though 😉I don’t understand why people wear undergarments at any time, ever – never mind when sweaty-ball cycling.
A pair or lycra shorts with padding.
I wear mesh bibs designed for use under baggies - Perl Izumi I think, very light and airy, nice pad, and as they are bibs they stay in place (important for me as a fatty). Perfect in hot weather.
they also have lots of wee storage pockets which can be handy for keys, mobile phone etc.
Uniqlo Airism. They do some mesh ones now too, which are great if you replace MTB baggies with thin non-mtb shorts. Ultra air flow all round. Nice.
I thought I'd avoid the lycras under my shorts on Sunday. Turns out my BAM boxers have seams right on the edge of the saddle line. Jeez my arse was sore on both sides by the end of the ride.
Sod that, I'd rather have hot bollocks than saddle sore.
Scott Team shorts from Startfitness are the most lightweight lycras I've found. Not sure if they still do them.
Some underarmour tight boxers. Not sure if they were labeled as for cycling, but they were from CRC.
Some sort of stretchy synthetic material, and crucially, no central seam.
Long seated XC rides are not my forte, but I did complete the south downs way in a day in the above underwear, my arse was not the thing that hurt the next day.
Is this a wind up? Do people really wear undercrackers for biking?
Bizarre.
Have recently tried bib shorts under my baggies and been happy the only issue I've have is that on occasion the baggies have got caught in my saddle when descending.
I've always got on with Baggies and Liners that are attached so the goal is bib liners attached to the shorts...
specialized do SWAT liners
https://www.specialized.com/gb/en/mens-mountain-liner-bib-shorts-with-swat/p/175037?&searchText=64220-3902
but £90 just for the liners will not get sign-off from the Boss
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/st900-mountain-bike-bib-shorts-black-id_8530068.html
have a pair of these at £25 and a happier wife
Decathlon running boxers here. The longer-legged ones. Only about 3 or 4 quid. I use chamois cream for longer rides, but not for my daily commute. I've done a fair few 2 - 3 hour rides, and two 40 mile ones with no issues.
Endura Clickfast liner under either Humvees or MT500 Spray short, depending on the weather.
I've tried some Royal Racing mesh-type liner shorts which have a chamois. They are definitely cooler than proper lycra shorts and a good bet for shorter rides, but I want a better chamois for longer rides.
Sounds like the Endura Clickfast is a good bet. Is the chamois decent or just a cheap one?
I've discovered recently that my Endura, Madison and Mavic inners, two of which are mesh, have really sweaty pads.
I know because my new Galibier bibs are actually a lot cooler and less sweaty, mainly due to pad that has holes in and is much more breathable.
I have a combination of attire...
Fat Lad at the back do an MTB undershort that is actually pretty comfy and lightweight.
Madison Flux Capacity bibs - designed to go under baggies so have mesh bits. Prob still a bit warm for those today
The liners that came with my fox Ranger shorts is ok for short rides - not as comfy as the madisons, but def. cooler.
Is this a wind up? Do people really wear undercrackers for biking?
I was just thinking the same.
I mean, for an hour or so, maybe, but anything more than that then some padded shorts (bibs ideally) are so much more comfortable.
I guess it explains the amount of thread where people are struggling with saddle comfort.
Changing your baggies to a pair of Endura humvee lights should do the job.
I get really hot and these are by far the coolest shorts I've worn. Even cooler than my famous shorts with holes.
Cheap on sports pursuit at the moment
No baggies, only bibs. Usually Rapha Brevet bibs as the pad is perforated. Madness to wear baggies and undergarments - just go full XC.

Never had a problem with saddle comfort. Last time I wore padded shorts was about ten years and many thousands of miles ago.
I always wear bibs (whatever Decathlon has on sale) under the baggies. For me is not as much about saddle padding but mostly:
- rubbing and friction protection from shorts, protection, hip bag, etc
- it helps in crashes
- the chamois really makes a difference when the jewels hit something
On my MTB it’s boxers and baggies with no liner. Road its bibs.
only issue I’ve have is that on occasion the baggies have got caught in my saddle when descending.
You needs one a the new fangled dropper posts mate. 🙂
Bib shorts? In this weather? Is this somekind ofeinwinf up **** it couldn't be botheed. why anyone would give a toss what someone else feels comfortable in for riding is beyond me.
I have the womens version of these, cant fault them
https://www.polaris-bikewear.co.uk/Ars-Nix-Mountain-Bike-Liner-Short-p/pol01-5475-p.htm
Got them from their factory outlet a few years ago, mine are like a mesh an can be seen through
I really like the planetx padded lycra boxer shorts, cheap ,light and low key but work well enough for me and don't feel like your wearing a nappy :
Bib shorts? In this weather?
You know I'm 500 miles north of you...
After getting a couple of pairs of integrated bib shorts/baggies* from Aussie grit, I won't ever go back to seperates, they're awesome.
*not baggy at all, it's a stupid term really.
Dez, what are you on about in that last rant? 😂
This thread is bizzare to say the least
I've never worn anything with a chamois. I can't stand the nappy feeling.
Cotton underpants on hot days. Slithery material ones for longer rides eg 200km.
@honourablegeorge how far down the leg do the bike boxers go? I wantsomething that overlaps with my knee pads só the silicone gripper can grab it.
I wear bibs, decent roadie ones, under my baggies. I couldn’t imagine wearing anything else, they may be warm in this weather but they are just comfy and keep everything in check.
I’ve tried clip in liners and I’ve tried padded boxers and I just don’t get them.
I honestly think people wear underwear because their parents made them
No, it's because trousers and shorts have seams that chafe, and I have large balls and a decent sized willy that need support. Sounds like you don't have this problem. Also I change my underwear every day and this means I don't have to change my trousers every day.
Re the OP, you can get underwear in a variety of styles made from technical fabric, they don't get sweaty and sticky. I have some Colombia ones that I got super cheap from TK Maxx but I have a variety of others. IME the boxer brief style work well because there's no seam or edge to rub the crease of your leg. Same sort of shape as lycra but shorter of course and made to be light and non sweaty.
Primarni kegs under baggies.
Specialized SWAT bibs. I'd love to try the POC air bibs but damn they are pricey.
Endura Singletrack liner shorts under Endura Hummvee baggies. The Liner shorts have Enduras's 500 series chamois pad which I've found quite comfortable.
Duathlon shorts. They are (obvs) designed as a running / cycling compromise so there is padding but its much more subtle then with full-on bibs. Perfect under mtb baggies.
Light polyester 'sports briefs'. For MTB, long road rides and multi-day trips. Haven't worn padded lycra shorts in about 7 years now and don't miss them at all, even less in the heat.
Those swat bibs look good. I must admit it’s been a bit hot in baggies (thin Morvélo overland selectors that are very good) so I’ve been on the gravel bike in just my bibs.
I quite fancy a bit of storage in my bibs as I mainly don’t wear a pocketed jersey and dont want to wear a pack/ strap a load of bags to the bike but need to carry my phone.
Been looking at the Morvélo overland bibs with storage but their sites down for a week. The specialized thin under short bibs look just the job for hot weather if you’re also wearing shorts.
Are they comfy, what’s the pad like?
Bibs or padded shorts. Could not do boxers! Also were are you guys riding that it is that hot? South coast here and it is lovely, just off for a lunchtime ride.
You needs one a the new fangled dropper posts mate. 🙂
I do, but no 1.5 hour commute each day to work means I've got more time to ride and I've lost 3 inches on the waist my baggy shorts slip as they are not attached to the bib shorts/liner. Which is something to bear in mind if your waistline fluctuates like mine does.
Also the issue isn't when my seat drops, but more so when it doesn't come back up and I have to makeover exaggerated hip movement to free my shorts. On the plus side it did make a 10 year laugh when they saw me doing it at the pump track/trail near my house.
It's a nice problem to have and I have shorts that I now fit in that I didn't before.
