[Closed] What are the unbranded hubs on a Boardman?

Freehub has loads of play in it so decided to whip it off and look at replacing it. Looked like a Shimano one, same cup and cone type, but a 10mm hex key is nowhere near the size needed to get the freehub off.

Anyone had the same thing? Is it just a bigger hex key or a special tool job?

Cheers.

Some of the Formula hubs are like that. I think I bodged it with a big nut but tbh I don't really remember, long time ago.

Yeah, seems it could be an 11/12 or even 13mm hex. I'll have to take another look tomorrow. Then comes the fun and games of finding the correct replacement 🤷‍♂️

Some undo from non drive side. My Mrs hybrid hubs need 12mm hex and from non-drive side.

I suspect something from Quando. That doesn't narrow it down though

I expect it's a formula hub. I think they undo with an 11mm hex key.

My Boardman had no markings on the hub but the axle says formula. They look formula to me.

It reads like you’re intending to repair your existing hub, but if it’s any help to you - a few years ago I replaced the supposedly ‘Formula’ hub on a 2014 Boardman Pro 29er with a ‘Deore XT M756’ on the basis of the info in this screen-grab.

Even Boardman / Halfords struggle to replace them. They ended up supplying me with a whole new wheel under warranty.

When the hub failed again, I just bought a DT Swiss wheel...

Changed mine for a Pro 4 using the existing spokes. Worth it for the comforting clicking/annoying racket.

Beats using a bell on cycle paths!

Shimano freehubs use a 15mm hex key. I searched everywhere online for one. No luck. Mate who owns a tool supply shop sourced one for me. I'd suggest bringing it to a bike shop for removal though. Prob not cost effective to buy a 15mm key (if you can even find one).
