Need to remove one from a frame, conventional wepons/tools have failed and I'm reluctant to put any more force through the frame as the BB's already been repaired once (axialy cracked the shell and brazed).

The frame owes me nowt but I dont want to break it if I can help it.

Thinking of filling the frame with caustic and dissolving the seatpost and BB out, it shouldn't touch the steel but will disolve aluminium pretty quickly, hopefully eating enough of the threads away to loosen the BB.

depends on the model, some are a one piece steels shell with a plastic or metal collar on the NDS, some (like older UN72 etc) are Alu cups pressed onto a steel body.

Hmmmmmmm, might work, or not work then.

Worth a try though, just need to find a tank/paddling pool to do it in!

If that doesen't work and I resort to heat, will heating the BB to expand it and 'crack' the rust presumably holding it in will that work, I'm wary of heating the BB shell because of the repair.

t,

Have you tried bolting the tool on using the crankarm bolt and a large washer, then put the tool in a vice and turn the frame by hand?

Never failed me yet.

Caustic sounds very dodgy.

Yep, dragged my workbench! Going to try it in a bigger vice/workbench at the weekend but caustic's the next option.

Heating the BB won't really help - you need to heat the frame - hot water or a hot air gun might be enough

You need an impact wrench of the air/electrically driven variety. I saw one of the mechanics in the LBS using a Makita impact gun to remove a recalcitrant internal BB. Got me thinking !

I've just used my Ingersol Impact gun to remove Mrs Davesport's BB from her 10 yr old Trek. It was almost dissapointing as the flippin thing didn't even put up a fight 😆

I'm in East Lothian...Is that close enough to be of help ?
