I have 2.6 WTB Vigilante tough/high grip front and 2.6 WTB Trail Boss light/high grip rear on my bike. I did have the light/high grip front but Grizedale ate that. Anyway, the issue I have now is the rear, the Trail Boss seems utterly incapable of gripping to wet rock, so much so that whilst climbing up towards Bullpot, it was spinning out underneath me whilst climbing up the tarmaced road.

Anyway, I just took that as 'one of them'. Come heading up an incline and the tyre just span out on me again. My mate on his Minion DHF/DHR combo was fine and rode off in to the rain.

Perceived wisdom is that the Trail Boss is a great tyre in 'all' situations, but I'm just not feeling it at the minute. I'm inclined to stick a DHR on but just wondering if anyone else has had similar.

I've used vigilante trail boss combo in 2.6 but the tb was tough fast rolling.
I loved them and even they were great on rocks at antur shining over winter and loved everything apart from wet deep mud
I don't run fashionable low pressures I'd absolutely destroy my rims If I were to run low 20,s like the press advise they do
I ran 26 front 28 rear at stiniog and 24 26 for my local trails
I'm currently on 2.6 maxxis assegai and dhr2 exo+ which came std on my new bike and grip is fantastic but the sidewall support is shocking
I'll be going back to wtb when very soon

Trail Boss was shit IMO and an utter barsteward to get on and off too.

How are you spinning a tyre out on tarmac?

Unless it's icy, or moss covered road, I can't see how thats possible?

I found it ok and only ok in 2.3 tough high grip compound.
Was a cheap disposable rear for bike park riding. Not tried the fast rolling one.

If I want a fast rolling rear, it’s hard to look past Rock Razor.

Anyone checked what Remco was running today 🤔

Pressure too high?

I’ve definitely spun out on 25% tarmac inclines in the wet

I wonder if the tyre structure is firm knobs 😳 with soft grippy rubber on top. If so, once worn to a certain point they wouldn't be high grip any more ??

I googled' Trail Boss on wet rock' out of curiosity and found a bunch of reviews suggesting that it's not the grippiest thing out there on wet rock from which I conclude that what you're 'doing wrong' is running a tyre with iffy grip on wet, hard surfaces. I've not used the Trail Boss myself - I'm mostly a Maxxis and Rock Razor sort of guy - but I do have a 3.0 WTB Bridger on the back of an emtb and while it's good on soft surfaces, it's not the grippiest feeling compound rubber.

I think Maxxis has mostly got its rubber compounds pretty well dialled, not sure based on the WTB tyres I have used - Ranger, Bridger and the pretty awful Trailblazer - that WTB's rubber is as good. Or you're running way too high a tyre pressure, I guess, possibly.

Yes, but if I get them on right it cancels out the wobbles in the rims. 🙂

I run 20psi max, so I guess it's back to Maxxis, or maybe try Schwalbe. Wish I'd gone straight for something different instead of replacing the Vigilante... Cheers guys!

Apologies - this is going to turn in to a what tyre thread.

Maxxis dhr2 and the continental kryptotal rear have been good for me recently.

I have run a 2.4 trail boss fast / tough for Antur Stiniog - mainly as it was a cheap way to get a tough casing tyres for all the rock. It was ‘summer’ both times but the second time was biblical sideways rain all day. I thought it did alright apart from in the few muddy bits where it clogged pretty instantly - but I kind of expected that.
