Hi Guys,

After a bike that I will use for riding to and from work which is road and canal towpath. Would like to carry a fair amount of stuff on it, thinking front and rear racks and I will use it as the primary bike to take my little one out on. He will be on a Thule front seat or a pannier mounted rear.

What recommendations do people have. Not looking at a super expensive bike, will probably get it second hand, would like steel but alu is fine as well. Don't want any carbon on the frame or fork, just from a wear and tear front. Needs to have discs and flat bars ideally?

I really wanted a cargo bike and just missed a Kona Minute and I can't find any cheap ones for sale at the moment. Do I get a rigid 29er (like a high latitude), do I get a hybrid (like a Lithium or Ogre), do I get a gravel/touring bike (Vegabond)?

If anyone has any pictures of their utility bikes put some up would love some inspiration and ideas. Also if anyone has something for sale along those lines also let me know. I'm 5ft 11 as a reference.

Cheers

Tom

I have both a Vagabond and a Dutch Utility bike. Entirely non-comparable.

For urban fetching, carrying, loading up heavy, 'jump on and ride' with all the extras - there is no competition, the Netherlander is ling-wheelbased, bombproof, rigged to carry stuff, has dynami hub, licjs, big stand, high upright view of traffic, etc etc. Plus is supremely easy to ride.

Unless you wish to mostly carry stuff on bridleways, offroad etc, then many mtb style longtail/panniers/bikepacking/trailer options available. I suspect though that you're really looking for 2 bikes!

But for the urban grunt, you really can't beat a good, used, modern full-specced stepthru Dutch bike IME

eg like this

*Edit 'dynamo hub, lights'

OP Have a look at this thread

PS I owned a Kona Ute before the Batavus, again no competition - not for urban/stable load-lugging use. Nor for build-quality/detail/eqpt and finish. Not even close.
