So, my Continental AT Ride 700x42c tyres were a bit out of their depth on significant sections of yesterday's Yorkshire True Grit ...

My long term plan had always been to get 650b wheels and fit some 2" ish rubber, but won't have the cash anytime soon.

Have clearance I reckon for 700 X 45-50 tyres, so what is out there? Or faster rolling 1.8" ish 29er tyres?

a 2.1 thunderburt is about 51mm measured, on a 25mm-ish rim

Isn’t this what mtb’s were invented for?

Smart Sams come in various widths and have decent grip. They actually roll pretty well on road too, due to the centre tread being closely spaced, plus they're not super expensive.

WTB Riddlers come in 37c & 45c variants. I've the 37c on my On-One Pompetamine and they handled the Dirty Reiver no problem - the long stony track leading towards the second food station was about their (my) limit. Roll well on tarmac as well. Go up tubeless OK (ish), in fact they are a lot nicer tubeless than tubed. I say they go up tubeless OKish as the front mounted and held air OK without sealant but the rear took a lot of work to mount reliably - same rim front and rear. On the DR the rear blew, my fault in a way as the tyre was getting soft and I didn't put more air in, so it currently has a tube in there and from how the two feel the tubeless is a lot nicer.

Might be worth checking the gravel riding oriented sites  http://ridinggravel.com/   http://www.gravelcyclist.com/ as they often have tyre reviews, whether you can source them all here in the UK is another matter.

I have some smart sams for sale - if you want to try them.

They're great but the 47c Version won't fit my new bike...

@thomthumb ... What version are they (bead, compound etc) and how much would you want for them? Do they go up tubeless?

Beginning to regret passing on a pair of vee rubber (V12 I think) which seemed a great tyre, just not (quite) enough clearance in my Hack, but would have gone in the Pickenflick ... 🙄
