I'm still in the process of reviving my old Trance 29er with a view to finally getting back riding this year. Got most of the bits sorted, but the wheels were always the worst part of the bike. So, gonna put my xmas money towards some new ones. What do I want? XC/trail riding in the Peaks etc budget is around £300 i guess (not really sure how much decent stuff is these days, seems very expensive!)
142 rear and 15mm none boost maxle I think (all these different standards are ****ing bonkers)
Similar position in that I need some new wheels to replace my old Hope/Crest wheelset on my 29er; the hubs are fine but rims are not. Given my 29er is old standards (non-boost), Im not minded to spend out on new hubs too so thinking of just getting a rebuild done.
However, it hardly seems worth it when added up (cost rims, spokes and the the build itself as im not competent enough to do a wheel build) compared with these...
Wheelset DT Swiss 350 Straightpull XR391 29'' 1680g (fitwheels.eu)
The xr391 seemed a good balance of width (25mm internal) and weight for XC/Trail
All I would say is that straight pull spokes are great till they need adjusted or trued. J bend for the privateer long term fixability
My boring answer is if you don't have the cash for hope then DT swiss
My 1900's are fine. Apparently they have a very slow pick up. Even after being told I still have never actually noticed
The main thing is to make sure they come with the correct end caps in the box
All I would say is that straight pull spokes are great till they need adjusted or trued.
I was waiting for this comment as I realised after I'd posted they were straight pull 😀 Personally Im had no issue with previous straight pull spokes on various wheelsets including a nice set of 28 spoke DT Swiss EX1501. However, similar non-straight pull are available on that site
Would agree about straight pull, fine until you need to adjust them.
The hubs are just the stock Giant branded ones
DT Swiss straight pull wheel builds are fine, in that they never really need adjusting unless you have a crash and trash the wheels (unilkely).
@devash id agree right up to the point when they need trued after being fine for 2 years or so. After that they tend to bind at the nipples and rotate in the hub.
If you a re a lightweight rider and never put your wheels out, straight pull are fine. If you push your biking (ie push the components hard on a ride) and want to keep your kit maintained over time j bend are far superior.
That being said, if you can afford to get someone else to maintain your kit or just replace, crack on! IMHO obvs 🙂
@nuke- I've had a set of those EX1501 wheels- the rear hub shell de-bonded and was a write off. DT washed their hands of it- 2 weeks out of 'warranty'. See my similar post on anothers' thread who had the same problem.
Good wheels tho, right up until that point lol
I've been happy with my superstarcomponents V6 element set. On the XC side of trail weight, relatively wide. Easy to set up tubeless and so far running well.
replaced hope/crest combo when I found a crack in the rim.
You can spec them to fit whatever standard was in fashion when your bike was designed.
Same as ampthill I got some DT M1900 and the slow pick up is a new one seem as good as my other wheelsets
I'd stretch your budget and get these
Wheelset DT Swiss 350 Straight Pull XM421 29" 1670g 25mm | eBay
The XM421 rim is very highly regarded - light and strong, (although unfashionably narrow these days) and the 350 hub has the ratchet freehub mechanism rather than the standard 3 pawl mechanism of the 370 hub / 1900 series wheelset.
I've got XM421's on my bikes and really rate them .
As is always said on what wheel threads, the merlin Alex chosen wheels are hard to beat for the price. I've been running these on my 29er in the peak for years with no issues.
