Second bike question of this week....apologies! Still 'shopping'.

Are there any off the peg 29ers that fit this criteria:

Carbon XC orientated hardtail
100mm travel
3x10 drivetrain
External threaded BB
Budget £1500-£2000

Thanks.

Was gonna say Cube but its not threaded bb. I wouldn't let that put me off though.

Carbon, XC, Threaded BB http://www.santacruzbicycles.co.uk/Highball-CarbonCC/
2 On one's http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CBOOLURCHX9/on-one-lurcher-sram-x9-mountain-bike and a triple chainset & mech - Threaded BB

3x and Threaded BB may be a sticking point

Ktm & focus both do them, both push fit bb though.

What's the problem with them? Mine has done well over 1000km and is fine.

If you're tall enough to ride a 21", this looks a superb deal.

Medoramas has it, spot on - the Merida Big.Nine range is really impressive and superb value for money. Proper high-tech carbon frames and great spec for the money. Have a look at some recent reviews.

You could go up to the Big.Nine 6000 if a friendly dealer would swap out the double for a triple, too - even better value IMHO 😀

Dumb question .
100mm xc carbon 'race' 29er frame
Why not stick with 2 x 10 ?
Lighter , less confusing if you are doing 24hr solos or night laps, less gear overlaps, more choice of bikes coming with 2 x 10 as std. KTM springs to mind although the groupset and wheelset will be compromised at that price point. imo .

Also any reason not to go 120mm? most of the forks are 100/120mm anyway with spacers.

Carbon, XC, Threaded BB

...Double the budget!

I reckon you'll struggle to truly tick all of those on anything current! Threaded BB and triple chainset notably

I built up my Planet X Dirty Harry well within your budget. Does it have to be off the peg?

I picked mine based mostly around the normal bb and it's been great.

100mm and full xt. Build it with whatever you want.

£1750 , not mine or affilaited BB30 , but 2 x 10 24/38

Was right about the wheelset , but it can be done.

You could sell on all the new parts that are basic and upgrade easily.

OP said he wanted 100mm, threaded BB, 3x10 and £1500-£2000.

So far - apart from the Merida - suggestions have been 120mm, BB30/PF BBs, 2x10 and over £3k for complete bikes...

I agree, and yet you suggested one with a double, but suggested a dealer would swap it? What makes that any more valid than other, similar options?

The point is that very few fit the OP's full spec list, so people are providing options that he may like to consider instead.

I bought a Whyte 29C as frame only. It has PF30 but you can use the SRAM adaptors to fit a threaded BB (as I did).

Why not stick with 2 x 10 ?

Actually that isn't true. The beauty of a triple is that you can race in the 32 all day just using the granny for killer climbs as your legs get weaker. Has worked well for me for XC,3hr 6hr and 12hrs plus long distance events such as Manx 100.

Most doubles will be too high in 38 and too low in 26 constantly leaving me in no mans land either high up the cassette or low down. An XTR 3x10 is almost negligbly heavier than a 2x10 and allows you to run a 34 rear cassette which recoups the difference.

Fair enough. I guess my point was that quite a few of the options being suggested are a long way off what the OP asked about. I'm guessing he/she knows his/her own mind in terms of what they want.

My suggestions were ways the OP could get what was asked for. I'd imagine most dealers would be happy to swap out a chainset and shifters on a £1500-£2000 bike sale.

Lots of nice bikes being suggested, and in many ways I'd agree that OP might be wise to widen the net.

Apart from Merida, any others out there which tick all the boxes?

Taking the Merida Big Nine idea and googling with it...

Here is last years' XT edition model with 3x10, still a PF BB, admittedly, but far enough under budget to fit a Hope PF and still have change...

As with all of these gearing things it's entirely personal. I wouldn't want a triple even for racing 24 hour solos.

And if you also want to be able to ride on the road at >20mph.

The bike will be used for short fast rides, and also cross country rides (including multi-day rides) where tarmac may be used to join up off road sections. Hence I want a triple.

See that otherwise lovely Merida?

"Carbon frame with flax bio fibres incorporated in the seat stays for extra comfort."

Whats all that about? A linen bike frame?!

To be fair a double or even a single ring with the SRAM 10-42 cassette will probably cater for that.

Merida big nines are very good set up for XC racing. But if you are riding more for fun than racing I would go for a Trek superfly which would do everything.Double seems to work great to me.

I gotta say the opposite to be fair.

I like 1x10, 2x10 is great, but if I only had one bike for everything, including a bit of road work and big steep hills, I'd still want a triple.

The screw in BB thing though... Yes, Shimano BB92 BB's tend not to last all that long, and BB30/PF30 even less so, but... If the OP was looking at something like the KTM Aera Comp 29er (650b model featured in that review, but 29er model is identical save for wheel size) at £1449, which is quite frankly incredible value, there's plenty left in the budget to upgrade the BB to a Hope or a Chris King, both of which have replaceable bearings and will outlast Shimano BB's many times over.

I've done 2000 mile on a Hope Press Fit BB now on my road bike, the bearings are still as smooth as the day it went in! I've had Shimano screw in BB's last less than 500 miles before!

Got an Aera 29er on order for myself, gonna use it as my XC bike for this year (not that I'll be racing much). Have already sold one and the owner loves it, my colleague already has the 650b version himself and he loves it. I can't see past it myself as a perfect "budget" carbon XC bike. Will probably swap the wheels out for lighter ones I already own, but other than that, it will remain largely standard.

This is the one I supplied a few months ago for a customer...

Trek superfly 9.7. Will have everything except a threaded BB but as its a trek they have great warranty service. Think they are around £1900 but there a few 2014 bikes about for £1600.

"Carbon frame with flax bio fibres incorporated in the seat stays for extra comfort."

On some of their bikes Merida use flax fibres in the carbon matrix to add a greater degree of flex and hence comfort. It makes their hard tail MTBs and more sportive-oriented road bikes more comfortable over rough stuff.

They're exploiting the advantages of cf manufacturing which I see as a good thing - otherwise why not just buy someone else's design from an open mould?
