Think it's finally about time I dragged myself into the present.
Quite fancy a dropper for hardtail (kinesis xc130 that one day might get swapped out for a Cotic soul mk2), likely to be a 27.2 frame for a while.
The idea of upgrading and making bike heavier is one I struggle with so please educate me on the choices. Prepared to spend a bit more if it will cause less hassle and less likely to fail etc. Rather not whack out rrp on the Thomson option if it's not totally necessary.
What say STW?
I might have a Gravity Dropper to sell soon - because I am going to buy one for a 30.9 frame. Having looked, and tried, the alternatives I reckon tge original is still the one to beat.
Thomson
Just got one for my Soda - very nice

Thinking about a dropper for my Longitude.
KS do a Lev in 27.2 also, good post.
The Thomson is bloody brilliant if you want to spend the cash. Flawless performance so far, very lightweight, and the beautiful craftsmanship you expect from them. I didn't buy a 27.2 dropper for ages because I was concerned at how thin the inner shaft would inevitably be. It is thin but not flexy and I don't feel like i'm in danger of breaking it (touch wood).
There are of course cheaper options - can't comment as I haven't used them.
I'm one ride in on the RSP Plummet so can't comment on longevity, but so far so good. Having said that my mate had one for 12 months and apart from the odd strip and grease his was fine. I'm used to a reverb and it obviously doesn't come close to that but it was cheap and it works. Unlike the reverb however, you have to kind of unweight the seat before pushing the lever and them sitting back down on it again. By the end of my ride I was getting used to it though and I'm sure with more practise it would become second nature. If it was my best bike would I be prepared to spend more? I'm actually not sure I would unless I was used to the infinite adjustment and smooth action of a Reverb. I actually quite like the fact there are 3 levels of adjustment at set heights. Sometimes on the Reverb I find myself only wanting to drop the seat a bit, which is easier said than done when going full chat down some rocks.
I got a cheapy one to test the water on my MKII Soul - a RSP Plummet. TBH haven't got on with it too well. The main problem is the amount of force I have to exert through the remote to get it to work. Makes it a PITA when on rocky ground as you have to change hand position on the bars to get the leverage.
The first drop position of the two is probably a bit too low for my preference, but that's personal.
There's also a disconcerting amount of play (left to right and back to front) in the post, which I can't help wondering is affecting my pedalling stroke, even if it isn't.
On the point of ditching it.
EDIT: Typical STW - opposite reviews on adjacent posts.
KS Lev would be my recommendation.
Only thing with the 27.2 Lev is that you can't change the pressure in the air chamber so any problems and it has to go back for service. I've got a 31.6 Lev and it has been great, just need to get a southpaw lever for it.
i think due to teh nature of the beast and the loads and usage i think there are going to be issues with any seatpost you get.
for that reason i got the cheapest one (tmars). its been fine. about 1 yr of use in all weathers. i`ve greased it once.
I found my hilo good - basically did what it was supposed to though it got squeaky if you didn't lube it each ride.
Only other thing to say is that in 27.2 they can be quite sensitive to clamping forces. If your frame is quite loose with a 27.2 and you need to tighten the seat clamp a lot, it may not work very well. I had to add a coke can shim to make the post a tight fit in my frame so that I didn't have to clamp much.
I've got a X-Fusion Hi-Lo it's been faultless and works as well, or better than my old RS Reverb.
Cable release means the lever is very 'un fussy' stick it where you like, hit it in any fashion you fancy - job done.
The only blot was it came under pressured, but it's a five min job and it's been sat there now 12 months or more going about it's business without drama.
cheap too
I may be interested in that GD scotroutes - my email is in my profile if you decide to sell
I have an X-Fusion Hilo.
On my 2nd one that's been back for warranty. (i.e. been sent back twice).
Functionally it works fine but it's a bit squishy when you go from fully down to fully up.
Dropping it by and inch and sitting on it before returning it to fully up seems to sort this.
It's probably needs a bit more oil in it.
Moon - I've got a spare GD - not in use, so was going to sell through the classifieds. You could check it out when you're up in a few weeks if you want?

If you do drop me an email please as I may well be interested (email in profile).
Thomson in 27.2 is ace for me. Just a lovely bit of kit and easy to set up. Other than the cable movement which isn't really an issue (ie the loop of cable when dropping the saddle) it's better than my 30.9 lev in every way. And I love my Lev
I have an RSP plummet that also exhibits a worrying amount of movement, the saddle must move by about 1cm fore/aft if you rock it. Doesn't bode well for the thing surviving much longer!
Anyone tried / seen the Specialized XCP dropper?
27.2 in super light carbon. Just not sure if 35mm is enough, so would need to try 35mm drop with a regular post and see how it feels. I generally ride everywhere UK with post up and QR drop it for super techy steep stuff when on holiday in the Alps etc, so it might be OK.
Anyone seen the Thomson in stock anywhere for a decent price?
Both my RSP plummets are still going strong after 15 months and a Scottish Highlands winter. 1 strip/clean each.
I've had 2 Xfusion HiLos develop faults inside a year each (the second being the warranty replacement for the first) & have now been refunded the original cost as the vendor doesn't stock them any longer.
Where are people getting their Thomson posts from?
Given that I've got a spare 650b wheelset, a spare unused Reverb and a set of forks that can be changed from 26" to 27.5", I was considering buying a Switchback as the frame is cheaper than a Thomson dropper post. I've not quite managed to persuade myself of the logic just yet.
Vote for gravity dropper classic from me - I'm still using a 27.2 4" drop multi thats 6 years old , and the only thing thats gone wrong with it is the cable snapped at the lever end (and even then i was able to get the post to go up and down by pulling on the cable until i got back to my car and my spare cable - which i was able to easily fix my self. The great thing about the post is its totally mechanical no liquids to leak or complicated innards to go wrong.
On my newer bike with a 30.9 post i briefly made foray to the darkside and got a ks lev integra post , which was great while it worked then 2 months into using it , i rocked up to catch my shuttle to do the whole enchilda in Moab and found oil spilling out of the bottom of it - luckily enough i had planned for this eventuality and was able to pull the integra out and take my spare gravity dropper post up to 11000 ft and then put it together up there to enjoy the ride.
No more complicated air / hydraulic seatposts for me...
Anyone know of any deals on Thomson 27.2's?
Can't locate one anywhere...
I need one of these. But I'm on a budget.. martinhutch let me know if you sell your cheapy one for even cheaper 🙂
I'm still mulling it. But TBH given the amount of play it's developed, I'm not sure it's long for this world.
Hmm well send it to me instead of binning it, may be able to do something 🙂
I have a practically new Gravity dropper in the garage which was fitted but never used on the trail. Because it never worked on my bike... I think my seat tube is bent/oval/not-straight as even a normal seat post will insert only so far and then jam. Because of this I think the clamping stresses on the GD stopped it working smoothly. I've car-park tested it out another bike and it seems to work fine.
I've never put it up for sale as obviously there's an inherent risk to the buyer but as I say, pretty sure its the bike and not the post.
It's the 4" drop multi-postion turbo version. Anyone want it at a knock-down price? Email in profile.
Cheers.

Can't comment on 27.2mm droppers, but the Switchback is ace.
I swapped my 853 Slackline for one. The Slackline was too small and I missed the dropper from the big bike.
I was mulling over a thomson dropper as I wanted 125mm of drop rather than the 100mm on my 27.2 lev.
I ended up buying a different frame instead so I could run a reverb.
The main problem is the amount of force I have to exert through the remote to get it to work.
Check your set up. Mine doesn't require much force to activate. Check both inner and outer are clean try a bit of grease or lube on the innner. Check there are no sharp turns or kinks in the cable.
To the OP, if you have mega bucks then go for the KS LEV. Other wise Gravity Dropper and if budget really is very tight then go for the RSP Plummet.
I have a KS LEV (not in 27.2 though) and its very nice to use. Smooth reliable action, static cable and a very nice and ergonomic remote. Not used a Gravity dropper but friends have and have only said good things and general consensus online seems to be very good. I have a RSP Plummet and for the price its good. Reliably goes up and down. Its a bit agricultural in its action but it does what it says on the box.
I've got a GD non-remote one which is ace. Been back to GD for warranty fix despite me buying it used. I don't use it much noiw as its not remote.
Also got a cheapy Traildrop. Works well, but bushes are wearing fast and I don't know if replacements are available any more.
And I've got a 2-position Satori Pro, which is the same as the RSP and I've had no probs with that at all.
any x-fsuion Hi-Lo owners got the saddle lever going spare? will pay good english money for it!
i bought mine off ebay and only came with the cable remote but i quite often swap out my seatpost with one on a tag-a-long so CBA installing the cable every time.
or know anywhere i might obtain one...?
