Hi

I have a Sonder Broken Road on order that comes with WTB Ranger 2.8 tyres, that by all accounts are a decent tyre for drier conditions

I am looking at 2.6 (27.5 +) options for the mud and slop that I ride on longer XC days

Has anyone got any recommendations?

The Nobby Nic in 2.6+ looks to be a good option, I’d be really interested to hear any recommendations?

Cheers

I'd be avoiding a nobby nic, unless you're avoiding the worst of winter conditions, it would be a magic mary 2.6 every day of the week, i have them on both bikes in super gravity, but if you're not jumping or stuff like that then the super trail is a good option.

People seem to swear by wild enduro's as well, also 2.6", i have one on the spare wheels, don't fill me with huge confidence but i tend to hit FoD off piste and the likes, and others use them without issue, could be a cheaper option.

The big question though is what are you after, a mud shedding tyre due to living in an area with claggy mud (clay or chalky), so pushing up to wide knobble style tyres, or are you more wintery hardpack stuff with minor mud/puddle around, which could mean getting away with the nics or others like that?

I use 2.8 Nobby Nics all year and they've worked great for me. I'll be trying the Bontrager XR4 Teams when those are work as I've had great success with the 2.25" version on those on other bikes.

The conditions range from hardpack bridle to thick, wet and deep mud - a real mixed bag!

So ideally the Tyres need to shred mud and deal with the very worse of conditions

I’m thinking also a 2.6 27.5+ maybe better for longer distance XC rides as opposed the 2.8 Rangers that are spec’d with the Sonder. This is why the Nobby Nic caught my eye ...

I have used Magic Mary on my full susser - a great tyre but I was under the impression that these Tyres are not so good for XC type riding?

i run 2.8 (you know - real + 😉 ) dhf front and a spesh slaughter (it was cheap but i'm dead pleased with it) rear on my hardtail SS. seems to work well across a variety of conditions.

oh - i tried the wtbs. buy cheap buy twice. they were fing shit in any moisture at all.

Magic Mary don’t really fall into the xc ish type brief. I’ve just picked up a 2.6 snakeskin / apex (not the newest version) and it’s over a kg in weight and chunky. I believe the super trail is heavier again.

I’ve also picked up a 2.6wt Maxxis Forekaster which might meet your brief - particularly as a back tyre. It’s described as ‘aggressive xc’ - weighs about 850g IIRC and should shed mud ok. It should also roll reasonably fast.

I use 2.8" Nobby Nics and find them to be great on a 40mm 27.5+ rim.

Rode in all sorts of conditions and don't drag too much yet grip well enough.

Won't as good as more beefy Magic Marys but equally not as heavy or draggy I suspect.

I had NN 3.0 on my stooge they were great till I tried High Roller 3.0... much much better not had a single slimy slide on roots or goey mud yet running at 14psi seems to be the sweet spot 40mm rims

Nobby Nics seem to get the popular vote - Merlin have them at a great price at the moment in the Speedadix

Will buy a pair ready for when the bike is delivered

Can’t wait for the Sonder ....

Will have to kill my Gravel bike in the mud slop shit until it comes as FS packed away for the winter 😂
