We had the shakedown ride yesterday with my 12yo lad on his new trail bike. The tyres appears tow path ready and nothing more than that.
What’s the current favoured all round tyre combo, the Maxxis range is huge and pretty confusing?
Usual trail centres, local Calderdale riding and a short alps trip planned.
Thanks
WTB Trail Boss, cheap and effective.

Sounds like you should break the bank. You don't want crap tyres that slide around or puncture although he clearly won't be smashing through rocks like a 15 st talentless IT consultant. I'd go for Maxxis EXO casing triple compound / 3C which you might get for £35 quid each (Minion + High Roller) if you shop around and aren't in a rush. Otherwise if you want budget Maxxis (and I don't rate them but many do), get the OnOne Chunky Monkey / Smorgasbord combo and see how you go.
I thought minion, but dhf, dhr or dhr 2?????
Breaking the bank is relevant, I have Schwalbe tyres and they are knocking on £45 each end.....
To not help in anyway at all...
I like Maxxis Minion DHF front and rear for most of the year with a Minion SS if it gets very dry.
My 11 year old son gets on well with Schwalbe Nobby Nics and Muddy Marys.
The Specialized Butcher/Purgatory combo on my youngest's new bike looks good too.
Trail Centres, alps and Calderdale (gritty wet mud rather then clag iirc) I would be looking at Minion DHF, DHR or HR2. EXO casing as a minimum.
To save a bit of money you can go for a Dual Compound rear tyre rather than 3C, I have found them to wear well and have plenty of grip.
3C Maxterra on the front is the best compromise of rolling and grip.
My 12yo uses nobby nic front and rear and hasnt had any issues with them
I run the DHF 3C EXO front / DHR2 TR EXO rear combo and it seems to do a decent job in calderdale.
Look at the european sellers for some of the best deals. I got mine from Lordgun (Italy) for £30 per end.
I ran the On One CM / Smorgasbord combo all year round for years and rate them - £45 all in for that in 650b
merlin have a sale on at the mo... worth a look there.
Might do the trick, although might be a bit "full enduro" for a youngster

I would go with Butcher/Butcher Grid or Butcher/Purgatory Grid, both on offer at Tredz at £30 and £29 pounds. you usually get a discount code for £5 off £30 pop up so would order separate (get two codes) and save £10. If you go for the Purgatory then pop something in the basket to get to £30 to qualify.
Second hand can be a win here.
Lots to choose from, look for 'ridden once' things - amazing how many buy a new tyre, ride it twice and then sell on.

Also, what frame has he got? Clearance may be an issue.
Marin Nail Trail, clearance should be ok, it has a boost fork and rear.
Just spotted Maxxis tyres for sales at Blacks, they might be worth a purchase.
Another vote for Grid casing Specialized options 🙂
