I have a Trek Fuel EX 9 and a set of Mavic ST 20mm wheels to go on it. What 20mm fork should I get to replace the QR Fox floats?

Max travel would be 140mm, the rear end is 120mm.

The choices look to be;

Reba 120
Revelations (expensive?)
Pikes (heavy but plush)
Manitou Minutes.
Manitou Nixons
Fox Float 36 set to 130mm.

Have I missed anything - Magura? The cheaper the better but they need to be reliable and able to cope with the odd bit of DH and alpine holidays.

Cheers

can you not buy QR15 fox lowers to upgrade your floats?

Nah, too convoluted a route and would probably cost more than just buying a new set of forks. I also expect I'll be able to get over a ton selling the floats even in their battered state.

Hi Ton,

Send me an email with afew details. If the price is right it sounds ideal so long as it's not been crashed 😉

The 09 Reba's with black box MC would get my vote...

I'd say the same as fuzzywuzzy as that's what I run, but I dont have a comparison with any other 09 20mm thru forks.

However they are so much stiffer than the 07 QR rebas they replaced.

What about the Fox 32's with 15mm thru-axle? Very light for the travel and pretty stiff too..

Now that they've settled down, I'd finally recommend Magura Thor, I'd understand, given the reviews if people shy away from them though. Any of the RS forks would be a decent choice, Pikes are maybe a bit heafty but seem unbreakable...Rev's are Air Pikes with a lighter crown, but are expensive, Rebas: Good choice, my 2005 are probably the most reliable forks I've ever owned, and have survived being hamfistdly thrown down Alpine descents. Manitou? not a great reputation. Fox 36 A bit like overkill?

Not Marzocchi?

Completely forgot about marzocchi, did they sort all the problems with the early 55's?

Reba Team w/maxle is an awesome fork. If you know you'll be happy with 120mm travel then I don't think anything better is available.

The 2009 Revelation was heavy and unsophisticated by comparison (I've ridden both on same bike), despite being the same price.

If I wanted a longer travel fork I might wait for the 2010 Revs.

I'd stay away from Reba's on an EX9 personally, my EX9 feels steep enough with the 130mm fox forks and 120mm would be the wrong direction to go. I'm tempted to do what you're proposing and stick on some 140mm bolt through forks. I was thinking of 140mm vanillas QR15 if / when budget allows.

I have had 426 coil pikes, 454 air pikes and now magura thors

hoping the thors live up to the awesomeness of the pikes - build quality suggests they will
