So I'm looking for some new 160mm forks for a Transition Patrol.

I can find loads of 150mm bargains but not 160mm.

Obviously I would go for Pikes but again can't find any bargains.

What else, especially bargains, should I be looking at?

Cheers

Are you looking for new or 2nd hand bargains?

There's manitou mattocs on CRC.

Not used one myself though.

Either, I don't mind new or second hand. Oh and they have to be 27.5

Mattock Pro looks good and 18 bikes have X fusion sweep with the new roughcut dampers for 380

Yeah, I saw the pikes but they just destroy my budget.

I'll check out the sweeps thanks.

It's annoying because 150mm pikes an be had for £380

Mattocs, by a country mile. Not as stiff as Pikes, but they are the best damped off the shelf forks other than the Bos stuff - at a third/half of the price.

What about Marzocchi 350's?

Also which model, I've seen R, CR, NCR. Which are actually worth having? And if I buy new, how will warranty be covered?

See if Merlin still have any of the Marz forks - I got some NCR 350 Ti for a good price - if they prove to be good.

Buy 150 pikes and change the airshaft. Just changed mine took 1 hour tops.

Went the other way 150mm to 140mm

I keep reading that the Marzocchi's are really tall but the axle to crown is 545 and a pike is 544.

Anyone have any real life info on this?

Marz are going to be out of business next year, aren't they?

They are, but for the price if they last me 2 years I'll be made up.

I think windwave are honouring warranties.

I've got mattoc pros, and I am beyond happy. Easily as good in terms of damping as anything else I've ridden - and if they are not quite as stiff I've certainly not noticed.

Just done their first service, 500km,and they were near as Damnit perfect inside. Having had manitou forks in the past this is what I was worried about. Just buy them!

Sold out.

Not sure if I'm happy or disappointed about that.

Very interested to hear how the fork works out for you though - post a review up on here please!

After Pinkbikes write up of the Manitou Mattoc Pro, who would buy anything else (other than the anti zip tie movement members)? Performance, price and looks... next.

Yeah, I had slants before and rated them highly. It's between the Sweep and 350cr at the minute.

I've had problems with manitou in the past so will leave them for now. Glad they're back and delivering better quality forks mind.

The roughcut damper is a big setup from the rl2, takes a bit of time to get setup right but I like them now as much as pikes

By the past do you mean the 1990's? They've been delivering quality forks for the past decade. They don't seem to have half the reported issues that x-fusion do with things like creaking steerers.

They are also producing some really cool upgrades for the Mattoc this year

150mm pikes can be had for £380

And the correct air spring can be had for £35 I think.. Might even be able to sell the old one for close to that.

I'm on X-Fusion 160mm Sweeps and really happy with them, the RL2 damper has been great but I had to get used to it sitting in its midstroke during trail use, that's just the way they make them, they are very plush and yet the midvalve tech stops them bottoming out on big hits...lovely for a man pushing 40 like me!

....also read that the new Roughcut damper can be retrofitted to my version so might give that a go next year when funds allow.

I've got the 26 version, the Slants, 130-160mm version. Also from 18 Bikes, who are a great bike shop by the way. Excellent customer service.

The Slants are a cracking fork, they started off nice but once broken in were just buttery. No diving like the awful Fox CTD's they replaced. I would happily buy X fusion again.

I have 160mm Pike RC's (27.5) on another bike. Performance wise there really isn't much in it. Well from my experience.

A mate of mine is on his 2nd set of Mattocs after 3 warranty returns. He says they're fantastic when they're not exploding, mind, and Manitou have been good at dealing with the returns.

Will do. First ride today round the garden and up the track after 6 weeks with cast on broken wrist.

Initial thought is that it's touch and go whether the spring rate is soft enough for me at 11.5 stone. No pressure in the air preload.

Bit squelchy on the sound effects. Looks the part. Nice action on the compression and rebound knobs.

So, not very helpful yet but I'll post a review in due course.

Edit: wrist seems alright though. 🙂
