Is anyone aware of current conditions at Wharny and Greno? Not adverse to winter riding but rather not travel for a slop fest!
For the time of year the trails are not too bad, it's been fairly dry most of the week but rain is forecast for the weekend, so it could turn to slop over night.
That's just Wharni trails though. Couldn't tell you what Greno is like tbh, I don't bother with it.
Yea keeping an eye on the forecast, could be OK if we get there early!
Surely Greno will be fine, it's all man made hardpack. Just the track at the bottom of DH3 that gets really boggy isn't it? I haven't been for a few years though....
Where's the best place to park for Wharny?
Both for access to trails and minimising the chance of the girlfriend's Yeti being done over.
I always manage to get parked in the top carpark on Woodhead Road. Tend to go early so I can usually find a spot.
Daughter parks down at the bottom where ever she can get when meeting her riding mates as they prefer that end, however a few of them have had a bit of damage from the locals who think the parking should only be for them
The main car park gets full quickly nowadays.... I tend to park around the Wortley or Deepcar area depending on what I'm riding.
Depends on where you want to ride in Wharny. Park at either station Rd, Deepcar, or jawbone in Oughtibridge - if parking in Oughtibridge, ride up the road, over the railway and turn left past the concrete bollards.
I always have a car full of work tools etc when visiting and park at Cote Green, next to Pennine Country Store, alway seem to be people about and secure and easy access to the trails.
Greno is always fine, it's manmade built trails. It only suffers with freeze thaw damage as any man made trails do. Wharny is variable, some bits stand up well, others are slippy death rock central. It's a hard place to get a good ride in if you're not familiar.
Greno was fine on Tuesday. A lot of Wharncliffe will be filth, but there are some more durable tracks dotted about there.
Actually, I only did Steel City. Its imagine Pub Run and DH3 would likely be fine. But the ride back from the bottom of DH3 would be muddy af.
Yea I'm thinking Greno will be fine. Years since I've ridden Wharny so any suggestions on trails to look for?
Been dry all week round here. We had an overnight frost but the forecast for the weekend is rain from midmorning tomorrow and all day Sunday.
There is plenty to go at on the Wharncliffe side to suit most riders. There are usually enough locals around on a weekend who will tell you what's running well and what to avoid. Most will be eager to point you in the right direction. Some will allow you to tag along.
We usually decide the night before and then turn up early to beat the crowds and then finish up on the Greno side with a few runs.
Thanks for the tips guy. Successful trip to Wharny! First time in many years and first time not on a DH bike. Can confirm modern enduros are better!
Glad you enjoyed it
Glad you had a good one @mattkkitch! Sorry I didn't get back to you about the trails, had a busy day yesterday.
Wharny is an incredible place to ride.
@malv173 no worries its hard to go wrong! Def going to start going more.
Excellent. A friend informed me today that Greno is due to get some major work done soon. all three tracks will have work done, apparently. I'm presuming in part due to the upcoming Steel City race, but I think they're all due some TLC.
