Wharncliffe route suggestions?

Got a chance to ride somewhere a bit further afield this weekend and thinking of giving Wharncliffe a try, looks really fun from what I can see on YouTube. It also looks hard to find and link up all the good bits from Trailforks etc so was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or gpx routes I could follow? I've only been there once absolutely years ago and don't really remember much of it - are the climbs alright/not too brutal for someone of ok fitness on a non-ebike?

I've seen this video which he's linked to a Strava route in the comments, would this be a good one to start with? I probably wouldn't be doing any of the big rock rolls/drops etc but all the techy singletrack bits look fun and doable for me

Also I seem to remember reading about people getting mugged for their bikes in the area, is this still an issue and should it be avoided as a solo rider?

Why not just go and have a wander about?

Steal a locals rout from Strava?

There is all kinds of stuff in Warncliff. Some easy, some super tricky ( for me). I'd keep your eyes open down any of the trails.

I've been worried about the people getting their bikes knicked, so gone with a mate and gone early as I imagine there aren't many badmen up and about before 12 on a Sunday.

I ride there a fair bit so I've got numerous routes on Strava I can send you or the corresponding GPX. There's basically 3 areas, Deepcar, Warncover and the original DH trails. They're all really good and you could ride all day and not repeat the same descent. The climbs aren't easy but they're not the worst either.

I wouldn't worry to much about getting mugged, there's usually loads of people about on a weekend and I ride on my own there regularly.

Yes as per fathomer - the best way to approach it is to have a look at those 3 areas using strava(or similar) heat map. The main/best runs down, and the push/pedal back up wlll have the most heat on them. Just have a mooch about with your phone on hand with the heat map - its pretty easy to navigate really.

You could easily fill a couple of days there. If you've only got a day then it probably best to focus on the wharncouver and old DH areas as I think theyre more fun.

While we are on the subject....does anyone know where to find the big skipper rock jump? Ive never maaged to find it! not saying I would necessarily ride it mind...

Saw that in a Brendog video when I was looking up the trails, I think I'll be giving it a miss 🙂

Looking at it on Trailforks it all looks pretty easy to get around as a lot of the trails are kind of bundled together, I guess you just ride up the bridleway/fire road back up to the top?

Where's the best place to park? I think last time I went we parked outside The Pheasant pub in Oughtibridge then rode up the road, taking a left onto the bridleway into the woods. Looks like this might be the opposite side of the woods to a lot of the trails though, someone on a YT comment suggested Cote Green farm car park as well?

I might go up there Friday or Saturday morning. It's not really a route riding type of place, you just go up and down.

I usually get dragged around by mates who knows their way around. On my own I just jump on anything that looks fun then figure out how to get back up.

I don't go there as much as I should but I haven't had a bike stolen yet.

Cote Green car park is closer to the Deepcar trails, Oughtibridge is closer to the old school stuff. I park in Oughtibridge because there's probably less chance of having your car peeled open.

@el_boufador do you know where Blue Dot is, off the crags? If so, about half way down, there's a flat bit with an opening on the right, follow you nose in there and you should find it. I've been shown it, it's way above my pay grade!

Thanks all, it does actually look like it should be pretty easy to find my way around. I just want to make sure I ride that wide open bermy one, not sure what it's called, maybe it's Wharncouver. Looks really fun and fast 🙂

@sharkattack, I'm hoping to get there on Saturday but not sure what time. If you go and see someone bumbling around on a Vitus hardtail that'll probably be me!

Aye likewise. Usually park at Deepcar, go to the other end, Varsity end and work backwards finishing at Deepcar. Some good tracks at the far end although I'm still not over the Zesty reworking. 😭

That being said Deepcar gets left alone if the weather is bogging.

Whatever you ride @_tom_ you'll have a good day.
