After much prevaricating, I did a quick modification of the Amazon tourer today. Mudguards & rack off, Maxxix Raze 700x35C on, and a flip of the stem.

Pretty successful all-in-all. Steering is nippy, handling is lovely, tyres take the sting out of the gravelly stuff. The Ranges Road in the Pentlands was very bumpy though - either it has deteriorated over the flood season or my memories of it are somewhat rose-tinted. What was to be a quick spin ended up with a 54km loop!
Also - never seen Threipmiur overflow looking quite like this.

Excellent, my decision to buy a new CX bike is vindicated then, this ^ will be the next six month's riding for me I suspect!
Flogging a bit of a dead horse here but what pads do you run on your BB7s? Do they squeel in the wet? My stock ones are pretty unpleasant when they get damp...
My BB7s have suffered the occasional squeel. same for those I had on the Sutra. Thing is, I've noticed on the Onion too when that was being used for commuting and it has XTR hydros. In each case, I've managed to temporarily cure it by getting the disc/pad really hot. It only seems to happen after a few days of commuting. My theory is that the discs and pads are somehow being contaminated by road dirt/grime/oil, and that a decent roasting seems to remove that. I usually achieve this by doing some demon braking down a nice steep hill (Dundas Street was on my commute to the shop). I've given similar advice to other squeelers and it seems to have worked for them too.
FWIW, I'm using the stock Avid pads that came with the calipers.
3-4 years behind the curve eh?
😛
Aye. I experimented with the Sutra but I think the weight/steering was all wrong. This feels altogether better. Still thinking about gearing though. I'm considering fitting a 10-speed MTB cassette and 9-speed MTB mech for more (i.e. lower) gears like the Sutra had.
Hmm. Fair enough, I think my bikes have always suffered from sporadic use, I'll persevere, or just put the stereo in and be done with it...
Ooh, and I have some 105 kit I took off the Cannondale if you're looking for shifters, 10 spd, this years models.
