I'm planning a south to north Wales ride and have a few queries I hope someone can help me with.
1. The classic crossing of the Brecons is over the Gap. Is it as good as everyone says or is there a better one?
2. To get from the Brecons to the Doethie valley seems to take me through Sennybridge military area. Is it ever open to bikes? If so which is the best route?
3. There are multiple routes from the north end of the Doethie valley to the south east end of Claerwen reservoir, any recommendations?
Thanks
Offroadadventuresonline is your friend here. Where are you starting from?
FWIW- places to avoid are much of Mynydd Du (but by no means all of it), Eppynt (bogs and bombs), Drygarn Fawr (bogs, more bogs, Monk's Trod (Bogs in bogs on top of bogginess) Mid Wales is a bit damp, but there are ways through. Have you looked at Dave Buchanan's site? Google 'Hobbit's Tale' http://www.davebuchanan.co.uk/
I'm local and know the areas well get in touch if you want.
1. The Gap is OK. There are other options though.
2. No, its mostly not open to the public. You need to avoid the danger area.
3. There are not as many routes from the Doethie Valley as you think - not on the ground at least. Not sure riding up the Doethie Valley would be worth it to be honest. There are better options.
If you would rather have a hassle free trip, this might be worth looking at: A Cycling C2C tour.
If you are set on South to North I'd probably head up a more easterly route.
Thanks all.
Mtbmatt - you make south to north sound like the wrong direction, I thought this would take advantage of the prevailing winds?
