just drove through here on my way back from Afan

[img] [/img]

Made it half way in before the sound of masonry being chipped off on to the roof of the car reminded the bike was on the roof.....

Seem to have gotten away with just this....

[IMG] [/IMG]

I was in the market for some thicker grips too.
Stupid, but rather lucky. Might try my hand at the Euromillions tonight.

I'd take the roof off the car if I tried going in there!

Might be prudent to have a good look at the bars as well. They are probably fine but worth a check.

I bet that would have snapped a whole load of things with rigid forks on there.

What wheel size? 😉

Hmmm , that's the reason I drive an estate car.

What tyres for tunnelling ?

Seriously though, pleased you got off so lightly. Do check the bar and stem though !

I did the same at a parking place with a metal height restricting barrier. The whole roof-rack slid off of the car and landed right side up with 3 bmx race cruisers still in position.

I knew choosing 650b instead of 29" was the right thing. Everything else appears ok, but I think might treat myself to some new carbon bars.... Just to be sure of course.

If it was something like a Thule 591 that clamps the frame would it make much difference if it's a rigid fork or not?

WTF... 1.5m! .. that looks like the entrance to a mine or something else subterranean!

My car's 1.85m high so that would be very messy/expensive if I'd done the same.

Don't forget to tell your insurance company so they can pay for any damage done to the tunnel.

1.5m doesn't equaly 5'9". That cannot help either.

Assuming you backed out as the initial height is nothing like 1.5M

even a kids balance bike on the roof of Polo would be trashed.

I'd consider myself lucky if I drove down a drain and got away with just that

It's definitely higher than 1.5m. Bike was on a Thule 591 on top of an A4 Avant.

Thought it wouldn't take long. Does it not have to be an Orange Five for the full house?

Very lucky. Guess bike was on drivers side of the roof? Sign probably relates to the height at the edges not centre.

Aged about 19 me and a mate (and I think his GF) were driving through Hereford with the car loaded up with bikes. There was a VERY narrow and low bridge which represented a useful shortcut, so being a bit of a confident sort of fellow he decided he could slot the car through and there was enough width to accomodate the bikes on the back. Super carefully he inched his way through and yes, there was JUST enough room for the bikes on the back. However, a loud bang and clatter alerted us that there was nowhere near enough room for the one on the roof that we'd forgotten about 🙂

Fortunately it was one of those crappy bike racks that held the bike upside-down by the bars, and it just pulled the bars out of the clamp.
