I have just finished fully setting up a pair of tyres/wheels tubeless for the first time!

I've done it partially before (ie with rims already taped), but this is the first time I've taped the rims & everything.

I'm 'ok' with mechanical things, but not a natural, and somewhat tentative ... So I'm feeling pleased with myself.

Not even (technically) tubeless tyres!

So. Well done me.

Realise there's lots of folk on here who have been doing this stuff in their sleep for years. But anyone else claimed a small DIY bike maintenance victory recently?

Give yourself a pat on the back 🙂

I’m quite pleased with the hole I cut in a floor access panel for a new gas pipe without resorting to power tools, but haven’t done anything on the bike for ages.

Ironically, it’s still got a tube in the rear wheel because I can’t be arsed to fix a puncture sealant couldn’t fix!

Nice one OP. I fitted a KS Lev dropper in the summer. It only took three attempts (three ruined cables) and there’s only the tiniest bit of play in the lever. I’m the most cackhanded fool in the world so I was chuffed to bits.

I was chuffed to have built a wheel, trued it to well within 1mm horizontally, pretty good vertically, tubelessed, and installed tyre within an hour this week.

I've built a few this month, but don't usually build wheels that often.

Like you OP I'm not the most natural mechanic but over the years I've learned how to do most basic jobs. I still have to visualise a clock face before I do up/undo a bolt. Yesterday I took my rear mech off and bent the hanger back into workable shape. Felt well pleased, especially as the black dog was hanging round

I'm ok with bolts. But pedals. And BB cups? Still always have to Google to remember which side is clockwise / counter clockwise!

Wondered what all the fuss was about the first few times I did it, until you meet an impossible tyre/wheel combo that will reduce you to tears 🙂

Not cocky. Just quietly (and yes, publicly on this forum!) pleased with myself, especially since I had fully expected to fail!

I had tried a ghetto set up before on another bike with Chunky Monkey/Smorgasbord tyres and just couldn't get it to work. Too baggy bead. Might revisit that bike again and try it, maybe with a few wraps of tape.

Yes. Yet to ride the bike. Rear tyre lost a bit of pressure overnight but shook the wheel up some more, pumped it up, and seems to be holding air 🤞

FFS! Too smug too soon ... 🙄

Rode into work yesterday with the new tubeless set up. Lost a bit of air in the rear tyre so topped up for the return journey and got home fine (1 hour extended commute). Tyre a bit soft later in the evening, popped some more in. Overnight ... Flat this morning. Pumped it up, air seeping around the bead in lots of places, no amount of sploshing the sealant would sort it. Took the tyre off, cleaned it and the rim all up then tried again ... Would it go up??? Would it buggery! ... Feels like the bead has stretched as it's now such a baggy fit. Have stuck a tube in for now and will have another bash over Xmas.

What am I doing wrong?

The tyres aren't tubeless ready - is that the issue (but the front is fine 🤞)

Should have kept quiet rather than coming on here being all pleased with myself ...

It happens 🙂

Id go with another layer of tape and make sure you run a tyre lever on the inside of the rim to force the tape down at the edges.

I've found that it's all about the prep (make sure the rim is cleaned with alcohol, apply sufficient tape and flatten it down with the tyre lever).

Took me a few attempts with gorilla tape and I've also tried it with stans tape in the past. Another tip from someone on here was to "burn" a hole for the valve, rather than cutting an x.

You can fix this by adding another wrap of tubeless tape. Remember to clean out all the sealant from the existing tape, or it wont stick. IPA works well.

I just would not bother with non-tubeless tyres. I've run them in the past, but they aren't designed to work without tubes. For something that if it isn't working 100% can ruin a ride, use the proper items for the job. Buy some tubeless ready tyres.

This, I think, has been the problem. Think I've taped it up well, valve seal fine. No leaking through the tyre itself, just the bead hasn't got a solid lock into the rim hook. My MTB has proper tubeless tyres and they're pretty much bomb proof (and on the occasion I have to remove the tyre, it's a bugger to prise the bead away from the rim, so it's obviously 'locked' in place in a way these tyres aren't.

You can fix this by adding another wrap of tubeless tape.

I did two wraps of the rear anyway, and that was the first to give up. So, combination of not properly tubeless tyres plus the bead stretching has meant it's just not worked.

New, lighter wheels are the medium term plan anyway, so will just run with tubes through the winter slop, and until these tyres run out, and then have another (proper) go.

It's all good learning ...

On the plus side, have successfully fitted a new chain, so I'm not completely useless ... 🤔

Yup. Nope (cheap KMC, non-directional)

BUT. New chain skips in gears 5-7.

FFS!

Let the old one go slightly too long before replacing, so will now need new cassette. Old one back on whilst I order a new one ... 😳 🙄

Y'see ... This is what spannering is mostly like for me. Small achievements frustrated by set backs and things going wrong. That's why I'd been so pleased when I thought I'd set it up tubeless ok ...
