Weird one for your collective experience, I get an aching back when riding up steep hills for about 15 minutes plus, not your wussy road type hills but proper small gear fight up hills.

Never had it before and at all other times comfortable, short hills, road hills etcetera but in a big loop of 40 miles there are a couple of nasty technical climbs that hurt my back within minutes of starting but within 45 minutes of finishing it all good.

Weird huh? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

James

Saddle position or reduced core strength.

Also don't go thinking road climbs are easy.

Yeah, I'd go with weak core too. Maybe you're pulling up on the bars?

Happy to check it out, but have no other physical issues, regular exerciser, saddle is bang level with spirit level :/

Interestingly don't have the same issue with long road climbs, feels like its the combination of extra steepness and technicality of picking line etc.

I did wonder if it was related to leaning forwards more to keep front down but I have o idea about these things hence the ask.

Really odd as at all other times 100% tip top just steep technical offroad long climbs.

Ta in advance

James

Stretch your hamstrings, hips and glutes a bit more, maybe?

Muscle tightness probably from the strain. I bulged a couple of discs a number of years ago and I find my lower back getting tighter and tighter if I’m putting in a hard effort and haven’t done a really good job of stretching off before riding. As soon as I stop it goes away again.

Physio gave me some core exercises to help a few years back so I’m working on those again sporadically

+1 on hip flexors - creates an imbalance on the muscles that stabilise the pelvis, resulting in lower back pain. I started to suffer from this despite visiting the gym a couple of times a week, doing 200mile rides. And bollocks to riding road hills being easy - when I was road racing even in the 40+ age category we'd be going up hills in the big ring in excess of 20mph, on a circuit 7 times.
