Considering one of these over a smart trainer for a couple of reasons. Anyone own one or have done? What are your thoughts on it? What software do you use?
Me. Bought it February this year, and so far it’s worth every penny. I use a combination of Zwift\RGT, both work flawlessly so far (IPad/mobile app).
A few things I considered before buying...its floor space is smaller than the equivalent turbo + bike. For me it’s important as it’s in the house and the smallest footprint the better. Don’t think it’s any noisier than other machines.
Initial outlay is greater but reliability and after sales back up seem excellent. My issue for other smart turbos is the additional wear on chain/cassette, not to mention some terrible reliability reviews on the likes of Wahoo.
The big plus is it takes no time at all to get going. No faff getting bikes on/off. No dirt in the house. Just power on, load app and you’re away.
The only issues I’ve found is during FTP builders, with ERG on coming down from say a 700W sprint to 100W is a pain in the arse. Most FTP programmes I turn off ERG so I’m in control of the gearing(rather than Zwift). Also the coasting could be more realistic-I find myself not coasting as much as I would on my normal bike. No complaints about the changes of gradient...was an issue pre updates but I like the way the Atom reacts to changes of incline.
My biggest gripe is that Atom is not built for easy adjustment between riders, if you have several riders with height difference it is easier to buy (fairly expensive) extra seatpost so that only horisontal bar position needs using hex key for adjustment.
I had one on rental for 5mos last year and would have bought one but they seemed to be out of stock all the time.
What’s the Q factor like on the Atom? I (pre-lockdown) attend Watt Bike classes and the Q factor on the original Watt bike is my biggest grip with them
I've got one had it 18 months best cycle item I've ever bought, made a huge different to me in fitness and health.
I did a blog post for them on the progress I made in the first year with it and have continued along the same theme, mainly use FulGaz but have dabbled in Zwift this month for Variety as hit 400 miles riding in April and 500 this month on the back on just generally doing a couple hundred a month so it builds a good base, also managed 35000ft of mainly virtual climbing this month.
I've just entered The60 which is a FulGaz event of 12 back to back rides 16-28th June.
For me it's been and great purchase and also has made a bigger different to what real rides I get to do than I ever expected, in terms of both pace and stamins.
Many thanks for the responses 👍
A review of the Atom had the q factor slightly wider than a road bike but less than a mountain bike. I want to say 160mm but would really need to rewatch the video to confirm. I think DC rainmaker may have the full spec including Q in a post.
Nice work forge 197👍 all sounding good.
Thanks YoKaiser it's been good for me, just add in some motivation and all good 🙂
