The Endura pakajak got a great review in the last mag, and popped up again this time as a chosen item of kit

I have one of the Dare2be Struckout jackets from Rutland cycles (Spend £3.50 on lube to make it upto the £20 free postage limit)

It doesn't pack away that small (12"x8") but does the job and does it well for £17.50.

On second look they only have L - XXXL in stock, ok if your a bigger rider...

Pakajak seconded/thirded/whatevered. Packs down very small (large apple size), decent range of colours available. Sizing is fairly normal (bearing in mind that you'll probably have a layer or two underneath). I had a Montane of some description previously (before it got too baggy for me) and the material always felt a bit too fragile for MTB use, though to be fair I never put it to the test with a proper crash.

Just got a Madison Evolite from Start Fitness. £40 reduced from £100. Looks ok but haven't been out in heavy rain yet

Waterproof them with Nixwax or better a cheap spray. Even a bog standard nylon type jacket will last a heavy rainfall but you will have to keep wareporoofing them regularly. Better still as long as you don't need the stuffsack backpocket get a ordinary walking jacket from Millets almost a constant sale on there and your talking Gortex or the equivalent for 40 or less.

A thin fleece is also usefull extra. No need for a posh name any brand will do. Doesn't soak up sweat and is nearly always more than enough for freezing weather
