what you using.

i need a new one. my 5 year old columbia outdry is dead. but to be honest last few times it has felt horrible to wear. cold sweaty rubber johnny coat.

so i need something new. big sizing obviously. no hood needed. packable would be nice. and not too bikey.

any ideas appreciated.

You like Keela stuff so you could start there?

Marmot do some large kit as they're from the US

I've a Keela jacket - works well but does feel a bit rubbery...unsure it would be classed as breathable as I do get sweaty in it (but I tend to sweat a lot anyway, so unsure if the jacket is contributing or not). It keeps the weather out and feels comfy enough whilst wearing it...but the rubbery texture inside may not be suitable. Sorry can't remember name - Stratus, is the name of it I think.

Do you really want fully waterproof? If no hood, then maybe not?

If you go "Nearly waterproof" then you can get much more comfort (stretch) and breathability. Gore-Tex Infinium for example... comfortable, windproof and nearly-waterproof.

Also, ime, hoodless waterproof jackets do tend to be cycling specific.

7mesh kit is seemingly getting a lot of love & if it's as long lasting, rightly so. Dirtlej also seems well regarded, and you can buy a (reduced) suit for the price of one 7mesh garment and they do sell seperate top/bottoms, if you don't fancy a suit. I'm using an 'old' Endura singletrack jacket that works great, but the new (more environmentally sound) kit can 'wet out' even according to Endura, so I'm wary of buying more.

Keela Saxon for the win- decently breathable, made in Glenrothes (not China/India/Vietnam..), living wage, repairable at the factory and a good price for direct sale. Mine has lasted really well with years of hard use and is still waterproof.
Doesn't look too much like a bike jacket, depending on the colour you choose. Reasonably spacious 'cut'.
Keela do a lot of kit for MRTs, ski patrols, cop/paramedic cyclists etc.
Down sides- does have a hood, but the wrap away is effective and discreet.
