Have some Nikwak wash-in waterproofing in the cupboard - it's for waterproof breathable clothing.

Would it work on standard baggy cycling shorts?

Thanks as always. 🙂

It'll do something but in the areas that rub against you/your saddle it'll wear off pretty quick, unfortunately these tend to be the bits that also get all the spray/cack! No harm in giving it a go, I'm determined to get round to buying a pair of semi-waterproof shorts for this 'summer.'

Plus it will wash straight out again as soon as you go anywhere near it with washing powder. Pointless exercise.

The Grangers spray stuff has worked well for me before. Not sure I'd call it fully waterproof like Gore Tex but its goes a long way.

Needed a tumble dryer with low heat or coolish iron etc to set it. Use the Grangers cleaner or non-bio detergent at 30deg to clean.

Thanks for the replies.

Shorts are fairly heavy-duty ones, possibly a little water-resistant anyway.

Plus it will wash straight out again as soon as you go anywhere near it with washing powder. Pointless exercise.

Really? Has that happened to you?

Surprising fact: all cordura ( the proper stuff made by invicta) is waterproof as its made of nylon, depends what it's mixed with though, and not all cordura is proper stuff...

Anyway, CG, give it a good wash, and if its just a single layer then the stuff you put in the washing machine will work better than a spray on.

cinnamon_girl - use the spray on Grangers stuff and apply some kind of heat - tumble drier, iron - on a low heat with a tea towel between the iron and the fabric, or even a hair drier and they'll be grand!

You could always use the Greenland wax that you get with Fjallraven kit?

Just rub it on, and iron it in??

what a great question.
I really don't want to wear waterproof shorts or fit mudguards, but hadn't considered that you could just waterproof the arse section of your shorts. will deffo give this a go...

Thanks again. I do have Gore waterproof shorts that don't fit so just looking at a cheap solution seeing as I already have the Nikwax.

Yes, know I could use mudguards, and do have some, but they become a PITA when using the car. 😳

I'm more worried about destroying the shorts!

Has anyone seen that ultra-hydrophobic spray you can get? It's amazing, a guy treated some canvas white vans with it and then proceeded to squirt chocolate syrup on them, it beaded straight off!

No idea if this is helpful, but it's definitely cool.

No danger provided you follow the instructions and the washing guidelines for the shorts. The worst case is that they don't end up any more waterproof or that it washes straight back out next time.

Just pop your seatpost out, or just spin it round. 🙂
