Thinking I might actually try and use the MTB over the winter this year, to this end thinking about waterproof trousers might make it a bit more pleasant.
So, for XC riding, ie no pads, trying to go quickly, generating sweat etc. What's worth looking at? What sort of price-points exist?
There was a thread similar to this a few weeks back.
Generally anything waterproof will be sweaty, it's pretty unavoidable.
Accepting you'll get damp, but staying warm is the best solution.
For wet winter riding I use knee length sealskins, bib shorts and a long-sleeve base layer.
Over that I wear water-resistant, lightweight hiking trousers (I've taken in the bottoms so they fit the lower leg better), and a wind/shower proof softshell jacket.
100% Brisker gloves and a snood complete the outfit.
I'd go for waterproof shorts myself. The bulk of your hips / legs stays dry but you get enough ventilation to avoid boil in the bag. I have some Endura waterproof shorts which work very well.
OMM Kamleika pants
Very stretchy, put a loop in the bottom to get to go over overshoes or boots and not ride up
See them as a set of waterproof Ron hills.
Anything that allows water to run off your legs and into your footwear is a fail.
