What are people using as a packable pair of waterproof trousers for multi-day rides that go over riding trousers/shorts/lycra? Never bothered before - just got wet but generally had the option of a shower within 24 hours! But we are starting to plan more multi-day rides with the tent, and lucking out on an ideal 3+ day weather window seems unlikely! I am looking for packable, breathable and ideally a robust in the seat/ankles (yes, and the moon on a stick!).
Spotted some Endura Mtr waterproof trousers, which appear to the be forerunners of the GV500's, at a sensible price. Any experience?

I took waterproof shorts last year on the Badger Divide. Kept arse and thighs dry and non-chilled in the couple of downpours I had. Feet get wet anyway, and I don't really care about lower legs as they dry quick! A good chunk less bulky to pack than trousers. Otherwise it was pure lycra (which drys quickish anyway).
Mine are Madison DTE and have survived 3 or 4 Peaks winters now. They're not "waterproof" anymore, but they're a damn sight more so than anything else I own.
Using a pair from polaris good long zips and Velcro at ankles...seem to get the job done and pack ok
Assuming you are looking at summer riding I personally would also take waterproof shorts on top of lycra.
Montane featherlite running pants, did me proud on Autumn Badger divide and KAW trips (KAW during a named storm on the S Downs 👍)

This will fall apart in no time off road riding, it's not designed for the constant abrasion.

I've never bothered even on long tours because waterproof trousers are too restrictive and sweaty. Putting damp shorts/bibs on in the morning is unpleasant for about a minute then fine once you start riding again.
Waterproof shorts sound like a decent compromise although I haven't used them myself.
I've got a couple of pairs of WP trousers that I use for commuting but for bikepacking trips I take 3/4 length shorts (or over-knee at least). Combined with longer spare socks that are also useful as bivi socks if dry. Might take trousers if it was likely to be cold and wet but for general 3 seasons use the 3/4s are fine for me. I often take knee warmers anyway and 3/4s, knee warmers and long socks are pretty good in bad weather and adaptable to simple cold weather.
3/4s are just a bit lighter and more compact generally, that's important for something that may or may not get used on a trip. More vented / breathable. I rate the Endura Heliums, took a fair few days riding before the seat area started to wear / delaminate as they all will if they use laminate fabric in that area. Part of the reason I wouldn't spend more on full WP trousers is that seat wear issue. Could get something with a more robust and non-WP fabric in that area I suppose.

I have these, not intended for sustained riding because

But they're an emergency to avoid a soaking from showers.
Just sold a pair of MTR Trou, they would have been ideal but I'm a short arse and they're too long.
Thanks all. Some useful thoughts. I had somewhat given up on waterproof shorts as there is so little choice for woman - the Maddison’s are not actually designed for woman with cycling thighs/ability to deadlift! However a quick Google and I see Alpkit are now doing some, which are worth a try. We are never racing, so I guess if it’s every super wet, we’ll probably try and seek out some shelter.
Agree with comments above about walking/running trousers not being great with abrasion which is why I wouldn’t take my walking waterproofs.

Which is why I love my sprays - they are long enough 🙂
I use Endura MT500 waterproof shorts. I did a 4 day bikepacking trip last year, mate was in waterproof trousers. He as too hot, I was just right.
Dog poo bags in the shoes for if its a right stinker of a day is a handy tip
Huh…once again a waterproof short not available in a woman’s fit! Apparently woman only need spray level waterproof. Might have to see if the mens fit (normally they are too short in the crotch and leg!)
