I'm after a gilet, but not a tiny thin windproof one.
I just get too hot in a waterproof jacket. But the thin windproof gilets are ineffective once they a rewet through.
But an extensive internet search has yielded few options. The best seem to be some 'boaty' Munro one, but these have a short back, which will lead to a wet arse.
Anyone got any ideas?
Ive got an ultralight weight decathlon job. Packs down to the size of a satsuma.
Wore it through wet road rides early season and kept the chill off. Also used it in an early season open water tri with an air temp of 6.5'c. Quite impressed.
Thanks, but that all good if your moving. I need something that works when your stood in a queue for an hour waiting for you race run...
bin liner, just err bin it when you no longer need it.
It wont work for long enough- the fabric of your top underneath pokes through the arm holes, etc- it'll seep along eventually.
Gilets are mainly to keep the wind off your core/help keep ambient heat no?
What about something with T-shirt length arms, do these exist?
I doubt you'll find anything that keeps you dry for an hour when you're just stood around, they need air moving over the surface to move internal moisture away and provide a drying effect to the external surface. Anything remotely capable of that will be like wearing a plastic bag IMO
Brolly?
I've Got an endura waterproof jacket. The sleeves are removable. I wear it like this quite a lot.
Take a look at the Gore Phantom 2 jacket. Sleeves are detachable, so you can turn it into a gillet.
It's rated as a windstopper but holds up well in rain. (although i haven't used it in really heavy rain)
It doesn't pack down small.
Castelli Fawesome ?

Gore do one - don't know if it's still available, could easily seeing it being something that disappeared quickly.

Get a decentish waterproof jacket, cut the arms down and get a local tailor/altertor to turn up the seams/edges?
I have one that has been a lot more useful than I thought, I've worn it loads, so much that mine will need replacing (full length velcro instead of zip, burnt through the fabric alongside it). it keeps the core dry enough and warm enough for everything but the absolute worst weather when the full jacket comes out
wiggle do one for about £30, transparent ones look dead pro as well 😀
EDIT it's on sale for 20quid, gonna go on that

Ive a gore phantom 2 its very good but can get warm.
Paramo used to do a Gilet/Jacket (removable arms) that had slightly longer 'arms' on the gilet. Maybe called Torres or something similar.
Endura Convertible. (or the newer Humvee equivalent http://www.endurasport.com/products/?ProductID=379)
Its a bit boil-in-the-bag with the arms on, but works well as a gillet, with arms at the ready in case it gets awful.
Evans have them (small only) for half-price if thats any use
Buffalo Teclite Gilet http://www.buffalosystems.co.uk/products/teclite-gillet/
Although it will eventually soak up water you will be warm.
The paramo convertible gilet was called the 'third element', thoroughly recommended.
Discontinued now, but a few pop up online.
Try paramo 2nds or paramo extras. 🙂
Thanks peeps.
Lots of good recommendations there. But keep 'em coming.
Sun's out, so might be able to grab myself a bargain!

Castelli Gabba?
Etxeondo Team Edition Windstopper?
Sportful Fiandre Light NoRain?
Lots of different jersey along these lines. Windproof and pretty waterproof too without being too hot or too flappy.
I went for the Etxeondo when it was around £100 on Wiggle and it is perfect for a wide range of weather conditions. If it is grey and showery then it is my go to top
How about a Rab Vaporise vest
http://rab.equipment/uk/shop/men/vapour-rise/vapour-rise-flex-vest
Not waterproof but as other posters have pointed out the rain will come in through the arm holes and you will get just as wet as wearing a windproof.
I love vapourise kit, it keeps the wind off, is very light and most important it makes use of denier gradient which very effectively moves moisture from the inside to the outside, no really it does.
Yes you do get wet under really heavy rain but it manages to keep me warm and comfortable and dries out very quickly as well as helping dry out what ever I am wearing underneath
I use Vapourise kit all the time, walking, skiing, sea kayaking and mountain biking and hardly ever have to wear a waterproof these days, apart from sea kayaking in the winter where I where vapourise under a drysuit.
Thanks for al the advice. I think the Paramo is the way to go. Mainly cause it has pockets to keep my hands warm as well!
Cheers.
The pockets on the paramo 3rd element are at chest level, approx.
...and whilst the pockets are waterproof against the rain, anything you put in them is susceptible to the movement of sweat moving to the outside of the gilet. Put an OS map in one of the pockets and you realise how much moisture the jacket shifts, even in driving rain.
And the Torres is an insulating layer, designed to be worn over the waterproofs, should the weather turn very, very cold.
Not something to consider wearing in the British summer....though some people claim to wear them for bivvying, instead of a sleeping bag.
Hope that helps. 😀
Right, I'm confused now.
I did suspect the Paramo was more of a body warmer.
Perhaps the Rab is the way to go, less thick, more waterproof?
