Probably been covered before, but what’s good in the decent waterproof/winter shorts department atm?
Almost destroyed my Madison DTEs and need to replace asap.
The DTEs were really good and comfortable, but are prone to bits falling off, poppers adjusting straps etc.
Fancy a change.

Polaris apparel used to sell the AM 500 (basic, not the new repel) which were cheap and as effective as the old Altura attack 3/4's, almost as long as well. I'm not sure if they be re-stocked or you wait for the standard Polaris email 'sale' on the repels

7Mesh Revo, mine are going on 3 years old and still just as well put together and waterproof as they were when new. Not cheap but so worth it!

As lawman said. 7mesh revo. Expensive but I've had mine for 3 winters and they are still as good as new. I would get through 1-2 pairs from other manufacturers per year so in the long run have actually been better value. Fit and feel is superb too. They are also breathable and comfortable enough to wear on the off chance of rain or puddles too. I have sweatier pairs of non waterproof shorts!

I’ve found RaceFace Agents to be very good. They also do a very nice jacket to go with them.

I bought these:

https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/endura-mt500-waterproof-shorts-ss20/rp-prod174135

I like them even better than my current Madison ones, and much better than my old Altura ones. I sometimes wear them, even when it isn’t raining.

Why not the Repel

No reason, just was recommending the basic set, only to find they’re not in stock. The Repel look a nice set of short & if I needed more, going by my Experience of the basic version, they should be good

I've looked at those.

Returned the previous 540 version because the pocket zips broke both sides. The pockets were a silly small size (couldn't get my hand fully in them). Don't know about the new ones!

Not managed to find a pair of waterproof shorts that last more than one season (we are talking years now) before something breaks. IME zips on most (cheap and nasty), not just waterproof, MTB shorts are piss poor beyond belief given the prices charged.

The only shorts I've had that have lasted are the old version Endura Singletrack 2's (not waterproof). Which don't have zips, velcro and magnetic closers, which aren't exactly ideal but at least don't fail!

Z1ppy they are named “Windproof” with DWR coating though. Not sure how effective these would be on a full day’s slopfest in the Manx hills.
How have you found their actual waterproof quality Z?

I got some Madison Zenith 4 season ones from a recent PSA that I think are great. Very comfy, seem well made and the arse is fully waterproof. Fronts are DWR so seem ok in light to medium rain but did soak through in some heavy rain while road riding.

@pipiom unfortunately they sound to be a different material to my more basic (& waterproof) Am500’s then, sorry I was assuming they’d be the same material but with zip/Proper pockets.
My am500 were sold as
Polaris AM 500 Shorts
AM 500 Waterproof Mountain Biking Short is an essential riding garment for Autumn/Winter. They feature 2 layer fabric with pu seams and waterproof protection. It features two front taped zipped security pockets and an elasticated waistband with lace ties for an adjustable fit. These shorts will ensure you stay dry and protected on all rides this winter.

Apologies

Pipiom, Madison have a lifetime warranty, it's brilliant, if stitching or poppers have failed, you'll get a new pair.

Bone dry and clean

Aye, always bought them from Sprockets, nae issue taking them back. Sadly they've stopped selling them now.

Always loved Madison for their fit and waterproofing, but I’ve always had to send them back when bits fell off. That’s usually a couple of weeks of soggy arse.

Ended up selling a kidney and clicking on a pair of 7Mesh Revo.
Thanks for all your advice guys.

Buying online I assume?. Another benefit of madison is that most bike shops (up here anyway) sell or can get their kit, so I buy from lbs, if it needs sent back, I just buy another pair when I take them back, and the money is refunded a couple of weeks later onto the card I bought with. Works for me.

I tried fox ranger, they were awful.

I’d love to buy local, but the LBS here that sell them have minimum stock, so it’s still a good while going through the order/returns process. Plus it’s a 30+ mile round trip for me.

Endura MT500 waterproof shorts are pretty decent!

7mesh look excellent! They are on the list for when the above wear out.

I hope you all are using mudgards with your shorts, otherwise you might as well be taking sandpaper to them.

I've tried Endura and Madison waterproof shorts, preferred the Madison's as I found the enduras to be pretty short in the leg, then I bought a pair of the above mentioned trousers. I cannot recommend the Fox Ranger waterproof pants enough, combined with sealskinz mtb socks they are by far the best way of staying dry on the bike, they are expensive tho and were out of stock everywhere I've looked since buying them

Any good 3/4 out there? As my Altura Attack is now only good as a windproofs...

Cheers!

Just looking at the Troy Lee shorts - that link in the thread has a review saying they are oversized and you should go down a size. Anyone got any experience?

Keen on the Fox trousers and there's reviews from this month. But they're 'unavailable' everywhere, rather than 'sold out'.

Are they discontinued?

So, my 7Mesh Revos are here and I tried them yesterday. All of your comments became evident: supercomfortable if a bit swishy when pedalling; not a drop of slop penetrated or was even evident on the rear.

As usual, I didn’t read the instructions, and now have (after using my usual washing machine setting)
Does everyone comply with all of this 👇

I have last years winter fox trousers in fact i have 2 pairs because they are so good. A little short in the leg if you're plus 6ft, but all winter they kept me perfectly warm and dry. Realistically very little will keep you 100% dry if you're out on the hill for a few hours in the winter. The biggest plus for me is post ride just pull them off and your are clean no more moving mud about with a towel or sitting on a towel for the drive home

If we’re on waterproofs generally I would still say I highly rate ex army MTP lightweight goretex jacket and trousers - perfect for on the bike and very good quality for the price (<£50 for jacket and trousers). I generally use mtb specific shorts and jacket, but keep these for the very worst/ most sloppy days and they are excellent. You just have to resist the urge to dig trenches everywhere 😂.

Just not used to such a performance in order to wash/dry my shorts I guess.
But, if them’s the rules, I’ll do it.
