Previously I've always subscribed to the "a bit of grit does you good" approach to hygiene. But after being in a well controlled family bubble for weeks, the last two days of s***ing through the eye of a needle can only be attributed to my muddy gravel ride on Sunday. Ive always used a backpack on my MTB but that seems wrong on gravel / cross type rides so I went with a bottle and cage. A decision i am now regretting.

Have now ordered a drinks bottle with a proper lid. Don't put yourselves through this misery kids!

Which one have you gone for? I've got a decathlon one for particularly muddy rides but the cap isn't that great.

An Ion8 one. Seems to get good reviews and you can lock the cap down.

What you need is a Pooguard©

Scotroutes, I'd been thinking of something like that (read procrastinating about knocking something up) - great idea! Can you make me one 🙂

Camelback podium with the wee black rubber top.

@scotroutes how well does it work? I've got a crud catcher on directly below my bottle and it still gets covered in crap.

Pooguard. Ha ha. Thats brilliant.

Although as you can get bottles with lids isn't that a slightly over engineered solution scotroutes?

By the look of it, I'm sure it was designed with multiple uses in mind.

Camelbak podium dirt series.
Comes with the wee black rubber lid to keep the crap off the bite valve.

I’ve got a couple of decathlon ones that were like £1.50 each or something daft like that. Have the flip top and the nozzle bit you drink from is lasting way better than Hi5 bottles that seem to disintegrate / leak after a while.

I had the Camelback but used it on my road bike. Going down a fast hill the slipstream blew the cap off! I know you can buy a replacement cap but it costs more than two Decathlon bottles which is what I will be buying next.

I put fizzy water in mine, yeah I know weird. But when you turn it open a small amount of water spurts out cleaning the bit you put in your mouth. Works for me 🙂

Old racer trick is to give it a squirt before you drink it and don't put the valve in your mouth .

I had a similar experience a few years ago. Me and one of my sons went for a wet ride through some lanes that a muck spreader had been through and we both had violent stomach upsets. My other son and wife were fine and we had all eaten the same food prior to the ride.

I bought some of these:

Decathlon one for £1.50, or just unscrew the top off and drink out of it like a cup!!

Options I've seen...

Podium Dirt (or the mud cap on it's own, if you can find it in stock) - there's no clear option though to allow seeing how much water is left, maybe swap it onto a normal clear Podium.

Elite Fly MTB (or the Nukeproof variant) - very light not that tough.

Podium, with the cap from a Chute - works very well for me, it's a two-handed task to open it though.

Dawn To Dusk Dirt mask (also fits the newer Podiums), the bottle designs are ugly though.

Pooguard looks like a much better solution to me than a bottle with a cap. Means you can use any bottle and not have the faff of removing a cap.

That or just a mudguard under the tube...

I run a Podium with a cap on it. Have been tempted by the Fidlock bottle with the lid.

Good shout OP! With all the leaf litter about at the moment - where sh&&e can be hidden - it's just a matter of time till this happens to me 😣

I tend to drink directly from the bottle (no lid) as mentioned above when the bottle drink spout 'looks' contaminated.

But I'm now looking at getting a couple of the lidded types. 👍

EDIT:- The CamelBak Podium 'Dirt' bottle is also double insulated so I'm getting myself one of them as this should also help stop my bottle freezing on a night ride. 👌

Pooguard cut from a piece of 4" sh$t pipe? Quite apt. 😁

Yeah, you can mock, but just wait until I've made my first £million. I already have plans for product development. I can't let you know what they all are but I can say that there will be a range of colours available - Titanium Grey, Stealth Black and Keech Broon.

Make your own. Get some plastic milk bottle . Wrap it around nozzle. Tape up. Punch hole and add string.

Love a bodge/top-tip/life-hack but that homemade lid looks gash. Sorry.

I use a Camelbak Podium Dirt Chill and it works well but the rubber cap is quite small. It does completely cover the nozzle but mud still gets thrown onto the lid. If you're not careful when removing the cap it's easy to spread this mud onto the nozzle, especially if you're wearing thick winter gloves.

It's not been a major problem for me but I'd expect a full coverage flip lid is more likely to prevent contamination.

Assuming this is the Nukeproof bottle in question, could someone do me a favour and measure the length of it? Can fit the normal (Prime) one, but I’m very tight for space so the cap may push it over. Thanks

I'd just pay the (rather inexpensive in the grand scheme of things) price of a bottle with a cover. Or if you do insist on making your own lid/cover then I'd use Sugru.

The first mtbPRO I brought in spring 1993 has a free nipple tassle bottle spout cover. Was ace. Miss it a lot. Especially in the winter:(

Yes, it is 18cm tall with the cap on.

For those adopting the squirt before drinking approach, and not touching your lips with the bottle, how do you open the bottle initially? I use my teeth to pull the nozzle open, which would somewhat defeat the squirting process...

Of course this is another opportunity for a 3D printer to be employed to create something elaborate and to spend hours gradually iterating towards perfection 🙂

We only use camelback bottles . Last longer (ie don't leak) than any of our other previous bottles and handle the dishwasher much better

The bite valve works well with a squeeze to clean it

Just passing through SportsPursuit so had a look for bottles.
There is one by Joe Wicks and one by Tramontina that have covers.

I use an Elite Scalatore, it has a cover that goes over the nozzle. I've had it a good few years, it's pretty battered but still does the job well.

I've 3D printed some caps to push onto the top of Fabric bottles. Work a treat. No photos to hand of it in use, but here's the model...

Mowgli! Was just reading this thread hoping that someone had a solution for Fabric bottles. If you're able to make some more I would LOVE to buy some off you?

I've used a podium dirt for years but thought it about time I replaced it. Bought a cheap planet x bottle and hey presto, the rubber cap from the camelback fits perfectly 👌

I've recently got an Elite Fly MTB, it's a lightweight race bottle - but with a lovely cap and nozzle action. And it matches my bike nicely too.

Mowgli, as a fabric bottle user you could be my saviour! 3 weeks ago I had an very muddy night ride, followed 36hrs later by serious unpleasantness.

Will send you a PM
