We booked a family holiday without checking TdF route, happens we're an hour and away from Rocamadour.
I'd love to go and watch. I think. Kidsre 2 and 4. Attention spans wouldn't stretch to sitting and watching every rider. They don't know or care about any of the contenders either. Same goes for my wife too, tbh. But the spectacle and the drama would be great to see, and Rocamadour looks well worth a visit regardless.
Current thinking is to get to Rocamadour early, mooch about in the morning, have lunch, watch some of riders finish, get out before it gets too hectic and watch from somewhere else up the road.
Decent plan? Really keen to hear any hints, good, facts, advice, especially if anyone knows the route and could suggest a lovely cafe with a playground and a great view!
Also happy to hear anyone saying watching an ITT on the road is dogshit and not worth the bother - 3 hours in the car is a fair investment in a day out.
Or is staying in Rocamadour for the last riders the best bet? Is there always a big party into the evening at stage finishes?
Thanks, I'm clueless!
We did kinda similar in a finish town about ten years ago when we were camping and realised were near enough to go and watch it. Got there in the morning, pre road closures, mooched about, wife got a haircut(!), sat and watched the craziness of the caravan (the kids will love that, loads of freebies), watched the peleton scream past at about 40mph, hung around a bit and went back to the campsite. It was a good day out, and they don't mess about with the logistics, the roads were reopening and the barriers coming down within minutes of the stage finishing.
Rocamadour is also amazing at night, beautiful illumination. Not saying you don't have a good idea, but if you wanted to go late (and avoid the heat), that may work.
Hmm. Cheers guys. This stage is an ITT, so no big wow, just many, many small ones. Think we might turn up early, do a day trip on the bikes (got trailer and also kiddie seats for our bikes) come back, watch some bikes, have dinner in a square. Guessing there is one!
Also, all the details of what time the caravan will be out and about will be on the TdF website
