Considering buying an ebike and browsing 2020 offers along with the secondhand market.

Would definitely want a warranty if going the secondhand route. I believe both Specialized and Trek offer warranty transfer from the original purchaser. Any other brands offer this?

Also, can you normally take your bike to a local dealer for warranty issues or do you need to return to the shop it was purchased from?

Cheers.

It's very limited, think Specialized and Trek are about it, and even then they are very restrictive to the 2 year from date of purchase.

I'd check buying new against secondhand a bit more, as prices for secondhand are a bit high at present, for a 10 or 20% discount on a 2020 is it worth the lack of longer term coverage and easier ability to go back for extras from a local shop?

As for warranty issues, as always, request the company tell you where to take it, most will point you local.

Cheers. Yeah I agree, currently secondhand prices are too high to make it worthwhile. I'm still waiting for all the bargains to appear from people who bought bikes to use over the summer lockdown! Although I guess while demand remains high prices will too.

I don't know how successful you will be at the moment getting the usual 10/15% off new shop prices, demand for bikes is so high they seem to be selling as soon as they are delivered.

An ebike us no different to a real bike apart from the motor, Bosch have a rolling 2 year warranty on their engines I'm told and brose now have a 4 year warranty, better than most actual bike warranties now

Specialized offer warranty to the 2nd owner, along with their crash replacement policy which works on a sliding scale (the older the damaged part the less % they offer off the price

There is more on their warranty page

https://www.specialized.com/gb/en/warranty

If you buy a 2019 or 2020 Levo/Kenevo they now come with 4 year warranty on the motor only from the purchase date

This is because there have been some issues with the 19/20 motor which they have fixed with the 21 motor

To give 19/20 motor owners some peace of mind they extended the motor's warranty by two years and if the motor needs to be replaced it will be fitted with the updated 21 motor

As for dealers they can be hit and miss, you can take it to any dealer and they should fix it for free and claim the labour back from Specialized but not all do this for some reason

Also some dealers are great when it comes to warranty issues, others are useless

Chris Reilly @Berkshire Cycles is known as the Levo king, same day motor swaps whilst you wait, he also checks the whole bike over whilst swapping the motor over with no charge

Ive heard of other shops who have bikes for weeks without fixing the issue or just drag their feet in getting motors in stock and even lying to customers saying Specialized UK have none in stock even when Specialized confirm they do on the E-MTB forum

Cant recommend Chris @Berkshire Cycles enough, personally i wouldn't buy anywhere else and he has people who drive 6 hour round trips to see him for warranty work and to buy bikes

He does great discounts on new bikes (i got 1k off my 2020 Levo Expert)

They also sell ex demo and lightly used Levo's/kenevo's with warranty, they normally advertise these on their facebook page and they get snapped up

Dont look at their website as its crap, call them up or pop in and chat to them, they are right by Swinley forest so perfect excuse to go for a ride and check them out

Thanks escrs. Will check them out. Hired a 2020 Levo Comp a couple of weeks ago in the Lake District and loved it. Only ebike I've ridden mind.

The 4 year warranty on the motor is very appealing too although you do seem to pay a premium with Specialized.

To repeat; it’s only 4 years on 2019 and 2020 Levo and 2020 Kenevo, both of which sold out ages ago. If you buy a Levo or Kenevo now it will almost certainly be a 2021 MY bike so have a 2 year warranty.
Be aware as well that there a quite a few 2021 Levo owners reporting 2019 build dates in the motor firmware.

Trek warranty started in 2020 for bikes brought in 2020 or 21 with a 3 year warranty to next owners only on frame but if the bike is a 20 model brought in 19 it is not covered that is what I was told.

Yeah the price for the spec on Specialized bikes isn't great but the warranty is so good it makes up for it

Chris@Berkshire said the next batch are due in November time, a mate put an order in for a 2021 comp and got £600 off the RRP

Re: specialized warranty transfer, you need to have the original bike shop receipt for the bike purchase, with the bike. Don’t know about the trek policy.

As for a premium on spesh bikes, they were initially more expensive to buy, & my 2019 Levo motor now has a 4 year warranty (as above, this covers all 19/20Levo’s & 20kenovo’s). That means I’ve potentially got a longer warranty than ppl buying the 2021 model this year, & is seen as worth a bit more because of that?

Oh & Race Co cycles in Stourbridge, doesn’t get the media coverage that of Berkshire bikes, but I’ll happily recommend them as a great e-bike LBS who go above & beyond to help you out

Trek is the same.

Subsequent Ownership
Subsequent owners (second or later) are entitled to a three-year warranty from the date of original purchase from the retailer. Proof of original purchase is required to validate the coverage period.
