Are XTR expensive BB's in the way Hope Ceramic or King are?

My BB92 XTR press works perfectly...

Strange experience with BB failures, when BB fails so fast: forgot to re-tighten the Shimano crank bolts on the non drive side. There is a small seal on the crank (at least on the Deore) and I suspect that the crank moves a bit out when the bolts are not torqued to 13 Nm all the time (and then water, dust, dirt creeps into the BB bearing?).

After first rides: the above bolts loose prestress.... torque them up to 13 Nm again!

Have on one bike an press fit XTR BB and on all others Saint threaded BBs. No problems since I'am doing the re-tighten thing on the cranks very carefully.

Strange effect.

Others can confirm / not confirm?

My xtr bb (threaded) has been good for two years now, so has my son's -  the answer is absolute minimum preload with the plastic tool- it's really easy to over press and crush the bearings, but if you just make sure there is no play, my experience is it will last ages.

As above with the pre-load: use the plastic tool to a gentle finger tight then back off a quarter turn then tighten the crank bolts to the required torque (or guess). Not had a problem with either Shimano or Hope using this method.

Shimano used to just warranty XTR stuff virtually as a matter of course - I got an old M952 Octalink BB replaced after more than 8 weeks (but still an unacceptably short time).

Creak creak creak

Possible "pedal creak"?

Easy to do: take the pedal apart and re-grease.

Still creaking?

And: when you take the chain off from the chainring: crank spins absolutely smooth - or not?

Sorry, don't hold with this. Shimano BBs (especially the XT/XTR spec ones) are very good indeed and last for ages, whether threaded or PF. This isn't like SRAM, where their OEM GXP bottom brackets appear to be made from Dairylea - Shimano's are well sealed and well made and last well. Oh, they're also pretty cheap.

I've got a fair old pile of expensive third party hubs, headsets and the like, but I've never found a need to replace a Shimano BB with anything other than another Shimano BB. It would just be burning money to no benefit.

^^^ This.

XT ones I've used (and commuter/CX Ultegra) have lasted a good 18 months - 2 years and can usually be had on offer for <£15. Don't see the need to pay more

GXP = shite (3 months, 1k km on the new Gravel bike) Do need to pay a bit more, but hoping not Hope prices.

Last XT one I wore out, I just replaced the bearings.  I couldn't be bothered to buy another tool for the M8000 BB.

So far, it's all good.

Hope with GXP adaption was only removed when I changed frames 😉 5 years and now it's in the spares box still running smooth. that is the standard.

Problem with HTII and the shimano crank is it's very sensitive to setup and fitting, not just punishing the hamfisted mechanic but generally anyone without a torque wrench at times.

Yes, they need to be fitted with care, especially as the standard alloy crank pinch bolts are quite soft and round-off easily if overtorqued or tightened with a worn driver. Personally, I always swap the stock ones for stainless steel versions (I have a big bag full!), then I only have to make sure I don't over torque and strip the crank threads, but at least they don't round off!

Personally, I think the HTII is an excellent system, especially compared to SRAM's "TIGHTEN IT MORE!" approach, which is, frankly, not much better than a square-taper crank. (Except that the bearings would last longer on a UN51 🙂 )

Hope are nice too, but I've never felt that their BB bearings are that much better than the stock Shimano ones to justify paying several times the price for them. I've had them on bikes in the past, spec'ed from new, and they still wore out eventually.
