On my ride this morning, noticed that more signs have gone up warning of work on the Houndkirk road, looks to be similar to the previous mess Sheffield Council made. This work is unnecessary (there are no access problems for anyone, in fact the last work they did made access more difficult), looks a mess, wastes public money at a time when supposedly funds are tight, and spoils a perfectly good trail for MTB use. I shall make my concerns known to local councillor, public rights of way officers, and local access forum, for all the good it will do.

Thank yourself lucky you dont live in Edinburgh... the tram works will continue until 2014 and they started here in what feels like 1873...

more work ? this is ridiculous. what we need is an organisation of riders in sheffield that will represent us and oppose this sort of nonsense. maybe it is time ridesheffield stopped apologising for the council and the rest of us got out and started showing our feelings.

anyone have any detail about what is happening?

houndkirk is the least interesting track to ride for 100 miles or more. I don't understand what the fuss is

I'm sure there's a pretty strong correlation between the demolition of the (largely brick constructed) demolition of the Fire Station / various bits of the Moor and Houndkirk re-surfacing

We (Ride Sheffield) have already held a various meetings with the council to try and prevent any further work being done to the track.

On the one hand we agree with Podge that it's not overly interesting and sacrificeable; however, it's popular with 4x4s and MXers because it presents a challenge. If that challenge is removed, they'll go elsewhere and damage other trails, which in turn may get sanitised as a result of their over use.

Anyway, our more reasonable forms of communication and discussion with the rights of way team have been fruitless as they seem disinclined to listen to anything that might change their plans. We have set up the following petition that hopefully lots of you will sign:

http://www.petitiononline.co.uk/petition/prevention-of-planned-surfacing-work-on-houndkirk-jumble-rd-byways/3751

We have also sent a FOI request to see if we can find out how much of our money the council are spending on these, and other, unwanted works. We'll keep you posted.
