I have some excellent wet/cool weather riding trousers for winter/early spring but am quite enjoying the whole riding in trousers experience. Are there any brands out there doing a well vented warmer weather trouser that would be comfortable for UK riding?

Things I like in my current troosers are:
- Tough against pedal pins
- Good pocket size/depth
- Keeps legs clean so whip off and walk in the house clean and naked to wow the wife
- Comfortable and for me with short, dumpy legs, I look slightly less ridiculous in trousers

Things I don't like:
- Bit baggy
- Slightly too long for me so bunch up (Short, Dumpy, legs again)
- Have venting but overall weight of waterproof material will make them too hot in summer.

Anything out there?

I've a pair from decathlon - which are nice and light.
Simple design with 2 zipped pockets

@jwh - Thanks, I saw these a while ago and dismissed as they said for riding in "cool" weather. Sounds from your description that they might fit the bill. Will see what their returns policy is and maybe order and check out, cheers.

The Nukeproof ones are lovely and light.

I have stumpy legs and I don't really notice the bunching up thing...

When it gets too warm for my troy lee sprints I go to my 7IDP knee high socks, knee pads and shorts. Keeps me a good temp and helps keep the worst of the muck off.

I've ridden with them through winter.
They are not water proof, but as they are a snug fit, there is not much to flap around with the extra water weight

I'm 182 cm tall and a 30" waist and i'm using the Medium

I did buy the Small as well -but they were far too tight to be comforatable when moving around

Fox Flexair are great, wouldn't stand up well to pedal pins or a big crash though. Reduced at the moment - https://foxracing.co.uk/product/flexair-pants/27433.html

Please tell me to chose the black colourway and not the tan 🙂 pedal pin protection is key as i am forever rocking my bike back and forward with my calf on the pedal and snag the pants a lot. Worth a look though as they appear to be a bit shorter than others that might suit my legs

@cha****ng - they look good, thank you, will be ordering these in to compare with the decathlon material

I have a pair of Alpkit ones. They're lighter than my other trousers (Keela Roadrunners) so tend to use them in slightly warmer weather, or with a baselayer. They're pretty similar to the Nukeproofs (I bought both to compare, and kept the Alpkits - not much in it though), but one nice thing about the Alpkits is they have different leg lengths. Worth checking out the ladies sizes too, which have shorter leg options (in fact that might be worth considering with other brands too). I went for a ladies long leg, just because I found the fit better generally.

Got these when there was a PSA - thin material with perforated side panels, not baggy, good length for my legs which are always 'S' in other trousers.

I second the Giro Havoc trousers, very well vented and light. I picked some up for £55 a few weeks ago in their sale. Definitely a 10+ degree trouser. They are also plenty long enough for me (6:2ft/ Size 32inch).

I have a pair of Alpkit ones.

For all the reasons you mention, these sprang to mind. However...

@thenorthwind - the reason I didn't keep them was no reinforced seat. How are they faring for you?

No visible wear, but I've only warn them a dozen times at most, and mostly for shorter rides.

Having short dumpy legs myself, I have put up with the bottoms gathering up of my Decathlon trousers.
They were a bit warm to begin with on last nights ride, otherwise I'm pleased with them.

The Giro looked good but no stock unfortunately, at least at the same price point as the others 🙁

Oh how I envy short dumpy legs! 🤣I’m a long leg and trying to find some suitable ones are hard, the decathlon ones will be great for shorter riders!

I have the Nukeproof and Alpkit arrive so far. Nukeproof fit well, they are long but the narrow taper means that you don’t notice much bunching up. Alpkit I went for the female option as mens were out of stock, turns out I am not a size 16 in womens sizes. Will have to return and try again.

I'll second the Decathlon ones, very good trousers regardless of the price

2 pairs of the decathlon ones here. If it's cold I wear leggings under, anything over 6 ISH degrees they are fine alone, over 12 degrees, shorts

Wore the decathlon ones at BPW on Friday and Afan Thursday. Really good fit, not warm at all, go over the big pads, fine to peddle in.
Might get some more now I see they are in stock.

*Update in case anyone interested*

Stuck with the Nukeproof option and after a lot of rides they are doing well. Probably only happy to buy them at a discounted price because I am a tight ar$e but they have done the job so far. Comfortable, light, knee pads fit under well, and they haven't ripped due to pedal pins yet. Will maybe look at the Decathlon as a second pair if I can find stock as Nukeproof back up to full price.

I have Decathlon and Nukeproofs, the Nukeproofs are noticeably cooler, to the point where I didn't wear them in the cold weather this winter.

What's the fit like with the Nukeproofs with kneepads under?

I wore my Decathlon AM trousers last night, it was maybe 10° and they were damp with sweat when I got home.

I'd also recommend the nukeproof, really light, but have lasted me close to two years now without a rip or wearing through, they're my default riding gear nowadays, and they are cheap, black, not at all baggy, and my Dakine slayers fit underneath when needed.

I'd love to wear trousers in summer but I suffer with heat management as it is. Good for overgrown trails, nettles, and ticks.

Latest Fox Flexairs have vent holes in the inner and rear thighs, probably makes them worse for non-summer use which is what I bought my older version ones for.

There's a trousers group test from last year on Pinkbike. The Giro is noted as the most well vented, but the phone pocket is poor and the other two pockets don't have zips.

Rapha has some "fast & light" "pants" recently launched, expensive though.

I like my Giro ones as well. They even have perforations to aid cooling.

Alpkit floe here. Another plus for me is available in colours other than black. Don’t want to wear black on a sunny day.

Alpkit floe here
"Double-weave water-resistant softshell keeps off wind and showers" - don't sound very warm weather-y to me

@branes @coconut @didnthurt What temps are the Giro ones good to? Not an alternative to shorts on summer days presumably?

Have comfortably worn them up to mid teens. They're pretty lightweight.

Off the back of this thread I got the nukeproof ones which are/were 30% off at CRC. So far so good. Stretchy, light, good fit and fine with kneepads. Although I reckon too hot if it gets above mid teens (mind I think anything would be bar shorts).
I've got them just because ticks are out in force and hopefully they'll help with the thistles later in the year.
