That noise when you use an MTB brake, sounds like a warbling / bubbling... what is it?

Quite possibly the pads passing over "imperfections" in the rotor, such as holes, slots, the spokes, or wavey shapes. I used to be able to feel it when braking on smooth tarmac too, but it went away when I fitted round rotors with a braking surface deeper than the pads. Could also be due to contamination, or glazing, but that normally shows up as screeching and juddering.
