BHF Peak District ride 21st October 2023
On Saturday 21st October 2023, the event starts and finishes from Hope Valley College in Hope, with a choice of riding three routes; 23, 24 or 43 miles, with up to 2,100m of climbing. As well being a great ride, there’s the opportunity to raise money for a great cause.
“Completely planned, organised and managed by the British Heart Foundation, this event exists in order to raise funds for our life saving research. This year we are asking you all to try and raise at least £350 to make a difference. Creating an online fundraising page is the easiest way to raise money. It takes a few minutes to set up and a link can then be easily shared with your friends and family on social media and by email.”
Peak District MTB always supports this perennial favourite; our members regularly volunteer for marshalling duties, and we hope this year will no exception. Volunteers are an essential part of making these events happen, and we are always grateful to those who help marshal. There’ll also be a few goodies for you if you get out there to help on the day.
So if you can, please help out, as working with the charity has been a big help to Peak District MTB. Their support has helped us to develop better and lasting relationships with landowners and secure permissive access. So if you can volunteer on the day we’d love to hear from you. Email info@peakdistrictmtb.org and we’ll send you more details.
Thanks to the BHF who kindly donate to Peak District MTB to help us maintain the Peak District trails. Thanks also to our committee member James of Bike Garage who generously provides e-bikes to the sweepers.
I did this a few years ago. Was a decent days ride, especially with the food/drink stops giben that it rained sideways for the duration.
Are they taking route advice this time or ripping the shit out of everything again and then buggering off?
Or do I just have too long a memory?
Far too long a memory. We got involved ages ago and they took on our recommended route.
I've signed up for this so hope it goes ahead. I think the £350 fund raising target is putting people off tbh, I know I might struggle to get near it...
I'll second what mulv1976 said. I get they are a charity and need to make these things worth their while. But with a cost of living crisis I struggle to feel good about asking friends, family and associates for £350 for me to go for a ride on my bike.
Also, and being really selfish I can ride the peaks any weekend I want for a lot less than that. Is there an option for just donating a tenner to PDMTB?
Well yes, always! But we'd love you to be part of this too. One of the other benenfits is that they leverage their charity status to push for permissive access for the event which we then make stick.

I've been pondering doing it, but do I have to raise £350? If so, I'll be frank, I'm out.
Maybe the shyness on numbers has something to do with the £350 target?

I felt the same and questioned the BHF, they were a bit coy about it (I guess they don't want to discourage people from raising funds), but basically said that the £350 is a target but isn't mandatory to enter the event. They give plenty of time before and after the event to raise as much funds as you can.
I see lots of events that I would love to enter but with a minimum target of £350 plus sponsorship money, it puts me right off entering, which is a shame.
Yeah agreed, just charge a decent amount for entry and dont ask people to raise money.
And if you are asking people to raise money then £350 is too much.
The thing is, for us 'regular riders' the Peak MTB will be a normal ride for us, all be it a big one, but I'd be being a bit naughty asking for sponsorship when my colleagues know it's something I do anyway. It's like Manchester/Blackpool etc, many folk get sponsorship, but I'd feel a fraud as I ride most days, and it's not a big challenge.
I've done this event loads of times (many moons ago!). Not a chance I'd enter now if I had to raise £350.00.
And it's not clear if this is a requirement or just a goal. 'Fundraising Target' is a bit ambiguous.
For those not sure about this, the £350 fundraising target is NOT required to enter the event, it is just a target to aim for. AFAIK the BHF are just asking people to raise as much as they can (understandably). They also seem to be offering 25% off entry fees at the moment until end of August with the code "LASTCHANCE25"
I'm looking forward to it, so I hope they get enough people. I doubt very much I'll be able to get near the £350 target and I feel a bit embarrassed asking people tbh, but I'm not going to worry too much about it.
I've thought about doing this, but...
It doesn't sound that interesting when the blurb states a gravel bike would be suitable
Its a fund raising ride, not a weekend in Whistler, what do you expect the route to be?
Due to the rough and varying terrain a hardtail mountain bike is best suited to this ride, although a short-travel full-suspension or gravel bike would also be suitable.
quite the conflicting advice, I did one of the long routes way back in 2014, you certainly wouldn't want a gravel bike (yes yes I know we all did the same routes on hardtails/rigids with 1.9" panaracer fire xc tyres in 1997)

Remotely interesting
There's a blue route for those that want something tame
I'm doing the 43 miles route and judging by the YT vids of previous routes, it looks pretty tricky in places to me. I'll be on a 29er Bigwig hardtail, no way I'd be on a gravel bike.
Im out, I dont want to give my money to BHF as its little more than a company dressed up as a charity. I would do a ride for Peak District MTB, and I do other charity rides for smaller local charities. Im just not interested in big corporate charity
Just signed up, looks like there's 50% off at the moment. Not going to push the fundraising side of it particularly for BHF.
I'll be riding my Stooge, should be a good steed for this one
Just for my personal situation, I wouldn't be comfortable asking friends/family/colleagues for sponsorship of any amount for something like this.
I'd possibly ask for sponsorship for something that had a real risk of failure/personal peril, like the Highland 550; or something that would just be plain miserable/feat of mind over matter like everesting by riding repeats on a single hill.
Apparently this has been cancelled? I haven't had the email yet, but BHF have apparently said they will keep the entry fees unless asked for a refund...
Edit: found email, definitely cancelled.
But the page to take your money is still active with no mention of cancellation.
Sneaky
Yeah, not a fan of the BHF after this tbh.
Yep we've seen it's been cancelled. They didnt let us know so we've put cash into promoting their event for them on socials. Not a lot, but for a small group like us every penny counts.
Anyway, we're now looking at what we can do on the 21st...
