You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've used Garmin for years - currently a 1030, but the Garmin 'system' isn't something I really like. The screen is fairly poor IMHO. I bought a Karoo 2 - unit and screen especially are superb, but there's a major issue with rerouting; it's rubbish off road and you can't disable it - see many complaints on the Hammerhead forum so it got returned.
The way I work is I plan a route on the PC, drop the gpx file into the head unit and follow the line. Sometimes map or plotting accuracy means you diverge a little, which would send the Karoo into a spasm of illogical rerouting. The Garmin you can disable this function and just use your eyes.
I don't do all the fancy datalogging/training stuff - this is just for navigation, mainly MTB and gravel. I have a phone with OS mapping if I need to check options or the wider area.
Does anyone use a new Roam for off road? In the case of minor 'off route' off road does it cope or do you get similar results to the Karoo, which tries to divert you to a road, or back where you cam from? Can you disable rerouting and turn by turn prompts on the Roam?
Generally what do folks think of the Roam?
Ta!
I used to use Garmin, had loads of them but got fed up of the battery running out.
I have a wahoo roam v1. Its exactly what I want, it does everything brilliantly.
I use it for navigation and every now and then I'll go wrong, the roam automatically re routes. Re routing comes up in blue on mine so I can see the new route. It's always been very reliable. Never had a problem with IT. I had ac bolt v1 originally and it didn't re route automatically so I sold it and bought the roam.
Sometimes I'll open the wahoo app to look at the new route and if I'm not happy with it, I can just click on the screen to where I want to go, change the route and send to device. It's so easy to use as long as you have an Internet signal.
currently on a 530. battery life is excellent and the screen is ok. Not got any grumbles with it yet. Used it for mountain biking and road cycling with the map. 4 hours on saturday and it only appeared to use 15%.
Love my roam. I upload a gpx file for off road and turn off re routing. It beeps if you go off course. Then zoom out on the map and just head back to the course. If things go really wrong i open the OS map app on my phone. Its perfect for me, and i really like the new climb function which tells you how far the hill summit is….
Battery life on the Garmin 830 is excellent. I had 20% left after a 300km audax.
I’ve upgraded to a 1040 solar and have to say it is superb. After initial charge I’ve yet to charge it and it’s 2 months old. Navigation is good, I’ve had a Wahoo Elemnt and a Lezyne Mega XL, both good but the new garmin interface is really very good. Like the wahoo and lezyne I use ride with gps and transfer to head unit via phone. Takes a few seconds to send and upload. Stamina feature is really quite accurate as is climb pro feature. I’m very impressed. Expensive but best gps unit I’ve used.
