I now have a Wahoo Roam after having been through garmin head units and decided they’re too much for my needs
Big fan of stem cap mounts for my GPS units but have an issue and I’m not sure if it’s just me or not
My wahoo unit doesn’t have what feels like a solid click when turning it onto the mount which is making me wary that it’s not as engaged as it should be and a little paranoid of losing it, when I had garmin units there was a very real, positive click into place and it never moved
with the wahoo, all it takes is a firm brush (accidental or otherwise) against the unit for it to start turning its way out
I have so far tried the standard wahoo mount, barfly mounts and an Amazon special but all seem to be the same. I tried a garmin mount and the engagement is much better but I’m now also worried that using a non wahoo mount on a wahoo unit is going to damage the unit or the tabs on the rear
is it just a wahoo thing, am I being picky or is something amiss?
A Garmin mount is just wahoo rotated 90 degrees so I can't see an issue using it.
I've had one mount that had a cheap 3d printed insert and I sent it back as the unit would rotate even with button presses (superstar)
I've now got one from Amazon that mounts to the stem cap but places the GPS over the stem so it's more protected.

Mine neither, but it's not fallen off yet.
Mines not fallen off yet either - do they come with a safety string as a back up to loop round the stem/handlebar?
Mine fell off at a sharp turn at the top of a big hill once when my knee knocked it. I bought a Wahoo tether and went back to OG bar mount.

I seem to remember one is ever so slightly larger than the other. I definitely had to shave some plastic off one when I switched to Wahoo.
a little paranoid of losing it
This is easily solved with a Lanyard.
My Wahoo mounts are fine. The only issue I had was with one of the first gen 76 Projects top tube mounts, which gradually loosened and eventually got really slack. They replaced it at nominal charge and the latest version is much better.
Is there not an optional lanyard for the Roam? If you use the original out-front mount, you can also bolt it into the mount I think.
Fwiw, I tried a stem mount on a bike and hated it. Felt like the unit was really exposed and very easy to accidentally knock, find I prefer either a top-tube mount or a low-slung out front one, the Wahoo aero one seems good to me.
As far as your mount goes, I'd lay the blame at the foot of the specific mount rather than Wahoo.

the Garmin mount does seem very tight which makes me wonder if that is putting undue stress on the wahoo units rear tabs (I’ve seen articles where these have snapped off for one reason or another)
from the comments shared, seems it’s might just be a wahoo thing

Think you’re right, it might time to invest in the lanyard
yeah use the lanyard, if you can find one
