We had one in store and it built up nice and looks like a proper MTB. Not ridden one in anger though.

Taking Leku Jr to have a look at a 15" one on Monday. Plan is to raid the spares box. Extra 10% off with British Cycling.
Struggling to find anything better for the money (or even more expensive).
26" wheels is a big plus for us.

Leku. I've been looking at the Whyte 403 but it's £625 which is a hell of a lot more but it has air sprung forks which are a lot lighter.

Mhmm . 403 has twist shifters and only 100mm travel fork.
Voodoo still top pick for us.

Hi, I bought the 13" for my 10 year old son for Christmas - it is awesome! If you are still thinking about it go for it. I did loads of research before purchasing it and I doubt you will get much better for the money.
It is a proper mountain bike and for a junior bike it is loaded with decent kit. The frame itself is great and fairly light (not as light as mine but what can you expect at this price level?). It's a tiny bit big for my 10 year old but I can see him riding this well into his teens. It is certainly a cool enough frame in a great colour so I expect he will be happy with it for a while and it is built solid so as they get older it will take the increasing beating.
I am very happy with my decision.
I hope my research and experience will help yours!

Cheers lunacycle. I got Ticsmon jr one for his birthday and have already upgraded the forks which are 2.5kg to some second hand rebas. 1.5kg. And the wheels to some mavic cross trail that I picked up very cheap. I also had a 1x10 slx shifter, mech and cassette in my spares box so put them on with a narrow wide front ring. It weighs just over 11kgs now which isn't bad. Should of weighed the bike before I started upgrading it to see what the difference is. This is the best answer I could find so far for "How heavy is this Voodoo Nzumbi 26 then " so thanks for posting.

Does anyone know how much the un-modified bike really weighs ? With the original forks in the above post, you'd be just over 12kg, original wheels and cassette.. could it be 13 or thereabouts ?

Orbea dont post the weight of their model either which is also a tad annoying.

I am comparing this to the Jamis X26 jr disc which is 14kg -- par for the course for a sub 350 mtb with sus forks -- although....

I suspect my 10yo will NOT care about the weight, will gladly ditch his un-cool isla-thing (we do kid ourselves don't we, and we know it, they don't care about the weight, but when we sell it and get what we paid for it because new ones have been going up in price ... that does compensate a little I guess) and will be throwing the jamis down hills and through forests like the best of them just because the bike LOOKS like it can take it!! He won't CARE if he is tired from getting it to the top of the hill, he'll take pleasure from thrashing dad regardless. In fact soon I will need to line his frame with lead I am sure 😀

The hybrid tyres and rigid fork things .. urgh .. OK I get it they are 11 kg or even sub 10 for the next isla fisher but they don't LOOK like they will be good for downhill mayhem do they, they don't scream NAIL IT at you. Same goes for the pinnacle etc.. They don't look like they come with mtb attitude preinstalled. Does that make sense ? Then theres the lack of 26 inch bikes generally. I think that has been done to death though right.

Looked at one for LittleMissMC a month or so back, local Halfords had one in. It's a cracking looking bike and great value.

Did occur to me that there was a chunk of weight to be saved to get the best out of it, so I got a second hand bike and did that up with second hand bits instead. Cost a bit more but much more fun

Yes -- very nice!!!. I could build (years of collecting special tools for every encounter) but probably not the time to spend hunting for parts at the moment. I did have a brief look for cheap frames, Inbreds are 200 quid right now I think its one of those projects you have to run over an extended internet-watching time period. Maybe if it really makes a difference and he gets more into it I can play swaps like the post above.

Caught somewhere between the Jamis and the Voodoo. The Jamis is currently only 312 quid at evans. The extra 125 quid clearly buys better components, I do wonder if it'll be all the more nickable etc. if he uses this as a general run around the streets and locks at school and so on.

If anyone knows the weight of the voodoo ... If not I might head down to halfords in a few days with some scales 🙂

I was looking at the Voodoo the other week for my daughter's birthday but went with the trott MTB from Cycle Republic/Halfords.

£320 with BC discount.

What a bargain. 1x11. Proper air Suntour Raidon bolt through. 27.5 wheels and really nice small Tektro hydros, it's perfect. She's 11 and over the moon.

Ladies size small btw.

I was looking at 27.5 wheels for a while. Little lad is 145 tall , 27.5 inside leg, it just looked a little overwhelming atm but borderline. I need to see him on a couple of these.

Whats BC discount ..

Thanks --- looking into those !

We tried the 13" Nzumbi today and yes I weighed it, albeit crudely. I didn't get to do it 3 times but my one-time measurement has it at about 12.7kg -- confidence level within say .25.

My son likes it way more than the alternatives, need to try a 15 though it looks like he'll be ok on one.

We have a Voodoo Bakaa (24" one)

It's got some compromises but it's a corking bike for the money. Most of the others at that price point or a bit more were a poor comparison.

The Evans discount on BC membership is now ended. So I searched around and discovered I have some form of ( " xexec " ) work discount scheme that gives 10% at halfords until sept. It hadn't even occurred to me to look.

Just gone for click and collect on the 15" Nzumbi, will try him on it, and buy if it fits.

Before I bought it I enquired about the weight of the 13" at Halfords and they replied to say it is 16.4kg.
I was not convinced about this and although I do not have suitable scales to weigh it at home I compared it to my 11.5kg bike and can confidently say it is not 5kg heavier! I would say that it is more like 14kg at most.
So it is relatively heavy for a child, but a really lightweight bike with decent fork will cost £hundreds more.
Importantly it is not too heavy, it rides really precise (had a go myself - it's like riding a BMX!), feels rock solid (see previous brackets!) and it looks COOL to a 10 year old kid!
Fordprefect, I agree, unless you tip over the 15kg mark, the odd kilo won't make much difference to most 10 year olds and they will be far more concerned with how it looks.
But it's not 'show and no go'; it has 'throw me down a hill and see what I can take" written all over it!

ps, it's in Halfrauds/Cycle Republic for £435 at the moment, but if you're not in a rush then wait around and I'm sure it will be on sale at £325 as it was before Christmas. Proper bargain!
Either way, still worth £400 imo.

Ticsmon, with all those spares you could have just bought a frame and built it up from scratch, no?!!

The 15 " fits him perfectly with the seat down and he loves it. Got 10% discount, def not waiting till xmas we have a whole summer of fun on the way. As noted I think the bike is 13kg

I get my ctw voucher in may, when its my turn to get a new mtb, in the meantime I'm still using an old trek hybrid with fat tyres installed. Edit no wait I can use the wife's mtb. Hah.

Recommendations for an adult mtb, circa £500-550 welcome.

The 15" voodo nzumbi is about 12.9 kg , measured by me holding it whilst standing on household scales. If I find a more accurate approach I'll do it again.

My road bike is coming in at 7.3kg with all the bits still on it using this approach, which is about right.

By the way has anyone changed the spring in the fork on this bike? The fork is a suntour XCR32. I haven't seen any literature to indicate it has anything other than a standard spring so I'm thinking swap it for a soft one. 11y olds aren't very heavy:)
