I have some avid bb5's in my commuter bike and rather than go for a whole groupset change to get hydraulic disc brakes I was thinking of a set of these so I could still use my current levers! They are £190 for the set, so just seeking views on if anyone has them and are they a significant improvement on mechanical disc brakes?

Better than my bb7s but I wouldn't call them fit and forget - never convinced they're going to last a ride with going wrong somewhere. A bit cumbersome as well.
Got them on my commuter, and apart from a pad change they've been flawless over the last 2 years. I haven't used full cable or full hydraulic on a road bike so I have no basis for comparison, but they have no trouble stopping me quickly.
I'm planning on upgrading to full hydro at some point and I'm sure they would be nicer, but the cost is currently prohibitive (I'd be moving from 10 speed 105 to 11 speed). And they are pretty massive.
I would love a full 105 hyd set up but the cheapest I can find the groupset is £449 which is about the same as I paid for the entire bike so it is a bit of a no go!
Some of my customers gave feedback that they developed problems with sticky pistons quite quickly, and brakes were constantly rubbing - these were people doing commuting in all weathers.
We don't sell them, but the same customers seemed to get good warranty support with the brake being replaced FOC.
Seem like an odd solution, with limited fluid capacity (no hose), resevoir sitting right in the firing line of wheel spray, and very limited piston throw compared to Shimano's road hydraulics. Cable will need replacement as it degrades, which can happen quickly on all weather commuting bikes.
They are not cheap either at £88 each end?
much better then std trp spyres. i dont rate the pads or discs though have stuck some uber race pads and sram centreline discs mch nicer and pretty quier in wet. meant to never need bleeding ! am gonna put some compressionless cables on sometime hat made a massive difference on some shimano discs had before
I have them and the basic advantage over mechanicals is that they're self adjusting. But if you can stomach the full groupset with hydros I'd go for that instead, as they're not totally faff free and I've had to unstick pistons once or twice (riding in all weathers, but washing the bike quite often so it doesn't get too salty).

Have you considered hope v twin? I've seen a few s/h sold on here cheaper than trp's.

Now that you mention it that's happened to me a couple of times. Anyway as I mention, will eventually swap out for fully hydro (probably next year) but they're a solid choice in the meanwhile I reckon.
Mine didn't self adjust despite setting them up as per the instructions. As the pads wore the lever travel increased until they came back to the bar. Replaced with Shimano 685.
Got them on my commuter, feel great in operation, excellent modulation with more power than spyres. Only been using them a month but so far so good.
bought as got fed up adjusting bb7's - ignored my natural tedency to think a mixed system a suspect compromise and trusted the reviews and consider it money well spent - done a few thousand km with no more attention than pad changes - never had a piston stick but live in sort of sunny Aus' (it does rain in Victoria)
had one scare when I left bike with wheels off upside down on back seat of car overnight after getting back late and there was an interesting whistling noise as turned bike upright next day - SRAM confirmed that like all hydro systems they have vents and you shouldn't leave bike upside down - got away with it though
as full hydro continues to reduce in price they will make no sense at some point
I had TRP HyRd's on my CX bike for a year or more, the main problem for me was the lever would come back to the bars when the pads were less than half worn. The fluid reservoir then had to be topped up to allow the remainder of the pads to be used. I put it down to the fluid reservoir being too small.
I have 685's now and they're superb.
Not really very helpful, but I can recommend 105 hydros. Did look at a bike with the TRP brakes a while ago but bloke in shop was not a fan when the 105 were not a great deal more.
Not used them but a few people on here have used Juin Tech. Think you can get them, or copies, fairly cheap off the bay of e.
Have used the Juin Tech's found the TRP's to be more powerful.
I have a set to fit this weekend if I get time and post back how they are.
Just didn't want to buy a new group set.
I've found them ok. Not used them heavily over the last year or so but no issues and good stopping.
One on the front of a tripster and one on the front of an offroad mud-plugger. No problems and less faff setting up than Spyres, pads have lasted well for me.
Cheers for the advice all! Didn't know about the hope v twins...... Tempted by them purely because of the name! Gosh I really am a sucker for branding 🙂 I imagine anything will be an improvement over what I currently have!
