I’ve been using Viewranger for the last few years and subscription due.

Probably don’t use all of Viewranger, and find it slightly clunky.

Thinking of trying OS for the next year, any reason not to?

Thanks

iPhone if it makes any odds

I never knew there was a subscription for View ranger!

I just buy the maps (tiles) as needed, although I did buy all UK national parks on a deal a few years ago. Not sure why you would need an annual subscription for either?

Does the OS have the 'buddy beacon' type facility?

I just find it handy that whenever we go away for a holiday or weekend away etc it’s all there without having to buy the map. I think I paid £20 last year.

I use ViewRanger without a subscription.

Open Street / Cycle Map is free and can be cached off-line.

I go the tiled route on Viewranger too.

I think it's hard to beat.

Not quite sure what viewranger etc give, but memory map are having a sale on UK 50000 35£ (Maps, routes etc etc,)

https://www.memory-map.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/11745/s/2020-memory-map-os-landranger-1-50-000/category/99/

No idea what it’s like on a phone, I like it on pc and it’s ok on iPad(creating routes, elevation profiles etc etc to get a gpx for download to satmap)

The OS map app is broken on Android.

I'm a long term subscriber.

They launched what they call version 2 last year.

Version 1 was spot on. Then they got some work experience people to come in for version 2. They keep doing incremental updates that fix one problem but unleash more.

I've tried mine on two phones recently and it's crap on both (pixel 4 and galaxy a71)

Currently mine won't save new routes planned, appears to run out of memory and goes potty when planning anything over 10 miles. Also has a silly auto zoom feature that everyone has been asking to remove for a good year.

Can't see my own old routes as there is 100s of the syfydrin route duplicated in my route folder. 100s.

Slowly trying to delete them but they seem infinite. Another bug. They match up to the web browser version but there is no quick option to empty out and it won't let me delete from there.

Was great. Now crap. Just read the reviews.

I'm a long standing ViewRanger user. Paid £70 years ago for the full UK 1 to 50000 mapping. Never had to pay a subscription.

Definitely one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Just a reminder that if you buy Back Country navigator it lets you "cache" as much off the country as you like at all scales. So at home if you draw a box round say Yorkshire then moments later it's all saved on your phone. I paid $10 it might now cost more now but less than viewranger for a year

I also have and pay for the OS so I can print and plan routes on the App. But the App is almost useless without signal.

The OS Maps app is free to use with open source maps. You pay a subscription to use it with OS mapping. You could always try out the app without paying anything.

Komoot? The route planning is much easier and it also suggests segments to include based on your activity.

Version 1 was spot on

There was a version released before that - it was utter crap & stopped me even bothering to read their update emails as other apps were so much better first release.

Then they got some work experience people to come in for version 2.

Sounds familiar

Haven't used the OS map app other than for viewing maps and a couple of small (20km) route plans but it seems fine to me...

Another ViewRanger user for years, Open Cycle map, OS tiles and area purchases have covered everything I have needed, very easy to use. Have started using Komoot more and more and gradually taking over from VR as seems to be easier to generate routes, between their own cycle maps and Open Cycle I don't really miss the OS on VR. It instantly makes available any routes generated on the lap top direct via the IQ button on opening screen of Garmin Edge Explore. This makes things so much easier and is now my go-to set up.

As others have said, I dont pay the subscription but bought all of the UK when it was on offer in 2013 and the app and therefore maps have come with me from phone to phone ever since, I just make sure I've downloaded the segments beforehand. If I'm going abroad I just use whatever maps are available for free and again make sure to download an area. Never had an issues with it and I quite often use it to look up peoples routes when I'm going to a new area to try to find a recommended route for free. No reason to swap to another app at all.

Re viewranger in general, sorry for slight post hijack

Is it the case that any tile downloads during the free 7 day subscription are removed after 7 days?

"Then they got some work experience people to come in for version 2."

Did they do the classifieds here ?

I don't know why no-one has mentioned https://maverick.en.softonic.com/android

Yup, me too.

I don't mind paying 20 quid a year, considering how much I used to spend on maps.

I am tempted to pay £25 for ViewRanger premium inc. OS maps but haven't been able to work out what happens to the downloaded OS map data the year after, if you don't renew your sub? Is it still there (if gradually getting more & more out of dates, not *so* much a problem if you're into historic sites anyhow!) or does the app wipe it?

Pretty sure it is a subscription so you will lose access. They have a purchase option that lets you keep them for life, I've had mine since I had a Nokia and moved them from phone to phone. It is more expensive initially, bit cheaper long term.

The free maps are very good but I do still like an OS.

@nickjb I couldn't find the purchase option just now (seems to all-subscription these days) and the T&C's didn't say either way.

So if anyone knows for sure (you D/l'd all the maps and let your sub lapse) - fill us in!

I use Maverick on Android and browse an area beforehand so it caches it in case I struggle for a signal.

I couldn’t find the purchase option

Just checked my app. Plenty of purchase options for 25k and 50k OS. £90 for GB in 50k, £8 for a region. That is potentially a few years break even so might be less risk on subscription but I have had my money's worth

OsmAnd is available for iPhone I believe, it's free and I downloaded the South West off line maps for free too. I paid a couple of quid to add contour lines. It can add a GPX route to the mapping which is handy too.
