A friends very old meta 5 frame has finally given up on him...
does anyone know of a similar frame where everything would swap over... standard steerer, 26”wheels, shock etc?
He’s not up for a new bike at the mo but would like to get back on the trails quick to get some rides in with the kids this summer

I’ve had a search for meta frames but can’t find any for him

Your need fork travel.i guess the rear is quick release.your need the shock size.might be easier getting a hard tail frame. Your probably need second hand to get the fork to fit although gt aggressor ht bikes have a straight steered and qr if you can find a frame second hand as do the halfords voodoo ht bikes.

What size? I have my Cotic Hemlock frame still in the garage,it'd be a pretty close match as long as it fits (it's an M, but a pretty compact one so could pass for an S)

Echoing the what size. I have a 2011 5.5 medium frame that would pass for a small.

Thanks everyone
He’s about 6ft and I’m pretty sure it’s a large, so unfortunately none would work... thanks so much though, an old used replacement would be ideal for him

just look on ebay for an early orange 5 or similar. that said, with an adapter headset you'll get all those bits to fit on pretty much any frame with a 135mm back end

What is broken? Could bits be foudn to fix it. Some bits like the rocker plates were the same across sizes, maybe even the back ends.

Cheers I’ll pass a few ideas for older cheap frames with similar travel...

Frames cracked, not really repairable, certainly not cost effective in such an old bike

A fair few did crack. I'd wager there are a fair few bits floating around garages broken in different places. E.g. if its the swing arm this should be easy enough to swap out cheaply from even a frame a different size.

@nixie
I believe it’s main frame, around seat tube... it’s a goner. It’s been cracked a while but he told me yesterday it’s finally gone too far.

I ‘fixed’ my 2008 meta with a seat post jammed all the way down into the frame (groove cut into it to allow it to be pinched) and cut flush then a secondary seat post inside that one.

That only works if it’s the seat collar section ie crack was not part of the front triangle.

Ghetto AF but I rode it like that for months before I got a new frame.

What's his budget. I think my friend is about to sell his large or extra large meta 5 in mint condition and buy an ebike.

I serviced it 10 years ago and the only time it gets moved is when hes needed to get to the draw behind the bike 😔

As you say, straight steerer, quick release, 26 inch wheels with slime tubes. Very hard to find parts for. It's full xt, probably 3x10 😂

Message me if your interested and I'll put you in touch with him.

Its almost a retro bike now. He can't believe how much its all changed in 10 years and is lost with it all.

Personally I'd convince him to buy a cheap 29er frame and fork. Re use gears and brakes, bars, stem, seat post and saddle etc and just buy wheels and tyres. Will be cheaper in the long run.

Ah well, my small 2011 Meta would be an interesting fit then 🙂
