Can anyone recommend a vertical bike hanger solution?

I have three bikes to store and would like to mount them vertically against garage wall

- one ~ 32mm tyres (wife's hybrid)
- one ~ 40mm tyres (gravel)
- one ~ 2.5' tyres (MTB)

I've seen everything from £6 hooks to £75 Steadyrack contraptions

https://uk.steadyrack.com

Looks not super important as this is in a garage, mounted onto breeze block walls.

Any recommendations?

Used to use PX type ones. They were ok once you had the bike in, but a pain to get deeper road wheels and wide MTB tyres in.

Recently took the plunge wi the steady rack. Well worth it. Getting the bikes in and out is much easier, meaning that the bikes are always stored where they should be, rather than not being hung “because I might go out tomorrow”.

Pack of hooks from screwfix. I got a set with smaller and larger hooks, and the wider ones will easily fit 3" 29+ tyres.

60x30mm baton fixed to breezeblock wall and hooks screwed in about 350-400mm apart.
Works perfectly well and cost a few pounds.

6/7 bikes stored upright in about 2.5m of space.

I've settled on Steadyracks. Got 3x MTB and 1x classic. They are expressive but worth it. And road bikes fit fine in MTB version.

I've tried the £3 hooks which are ok for the money so long as you can get to the bike easily - like post above.
Tried pedal hangers - utter PITA or my back. And just ended up scratching the bikes trying to lift over each other.
Also tried Topeak Swing-up. For the money they are rubbish. The £3 hooks are better.
My bikes are in the corner, partially blocked by the tumble dryer. The Steadyracks make it a lot easier to get them out without pulling my back trying to lift a bike at a funny angle.

They occasionally pop up on eBay for slightly less than full price.

I’ve got all my bikes mounted on velo hinge mounts. Works well for me as the ability to move the bikes apart using the hinge is useful in the space I have and then to fold them away when done.

I got mine from one of the German retailers, maybe bike24? A lot cheaper then Uk suppliers and had stock.

Velo hinges here too, I store 3 bikes on a garage wall and they don't stick out too much, taking up valuable room.

Using steady racks to hold my bikes up, looked at the cheaper options and figured that the steady racks are really well made and well secured to the walls, didn’t fancy bikes falling off onto the floor or each other.

I’ve not got the mounted super close to each other, the hinge feature gets a load of space back in the garage

Steadyracks here. Had the cheep’ hooks for years but got the steadyracks in a deal, wished I’d done it years ago.

Well worth it for the extra space and ease of getting the bikes in/ out.

Have used loads of 'solutions' over the years, from halfords \ PlanetX hooks to silly plastic stuff that the tyre clicks in to. Eventually got to the ultimate quality tight space solution which is steadyrack. Money well spent. Never tried those velo hooks, they also look neat. The steadyrack really is a very well made quality product though.

(of course the real issue is that I need less bikes rather than better storage 🙂 )

Happy with steady rack, have two rows of 5 at differing heights, so everything fits nicely.

The cheap hooks have been fine for everything except my fatbike for the past 15 years. I doubt it's worth "upgrading".

Thanks all - I've plumped for the steady rack. I've bought one extra... Now I'll need to get another bike 😀

£600 to hang 6 bikes!? 😆 Might be lovely, but that's ridiculously overpriced.

Must have spent a fortune over developing that fancy hook system they have

I built a system that fulfils the same purpose of hanging bikes from the roof ona. 3m rail by means of 8 hooks on rollers for 100ish quid.

their van rack looks familiar also.

I would have gone stashed products but didnt suit the location i had in mind.

ended up with a few steadyracks which are decent quality. very pleased..; but bikes do take up a air bit of space still

Another generic bike hook user. Bought tons when they were £1 at PX (if they're not a price you like, wait 5 minutes 😄), they're useful for wheels as well as full bikes. I slip the plastic/rubber padding off, hacksaw a bit off, and put the padding back on. Then they're fine for 3" tyres IME, and just make getting thinner tyred bikes on and off easier - never had one fall off.

Got 1 x SteadyRack and 2 x Clugs. If I find the SteadyRacks on offer, will be looking to upgrade.

The clug keeps the bikes in place but it's an absolute chore to click in and out if your tyres are on the boundaries of their width guidance.

I’ve got 6 bikes on 3 of the “sticking out” arm racks. One end of the garage has 4 bikes (2 up, 2 down) and the other 2 bikes up high with my sons wheelchair & walking frames below.

I’ve toyed with the hanging approach to try & save space but not sure if it would . I don’t fancy going to the effort of changing and it doesn’t work.

Steadyrack - never look back.

Great support, flexible and doesn't touch the bike in any detrimental way.

Big fan.

If you've got a bike upwards of a 1K+ then you might want to look after them and minimise any form of bashing and scratching - so 60/70 is nothing for something that basically lasts a lifetime.

I mean a lot of tyres cost this!

I always thought it ridiculous to hang from rims. Terrible system. Clumsy and awkward, and needlessly scratchy.

Girlfriend has not issue getting the bike on either with this system.

Cheapo hooks like the PX - they work well.

Not sure what you were up to with them but that's not right.

Enough about you, what do you think of bike hooks? 😉

You know they normally have a rubber/plastic coating yes?
Not knowingly scratched a rim in 15 off years if using my sub £1 a hook system.
For 6-7 bikes that's a saving of £300-600 depending on the system. Money for more bike bits!

I looked at these and eventually bought a Bike Nook, which had the benefit that it didn't need drilling the walls. Your wife may be more tolerant of that sort of thing, but this kept the peace and works well.

Thanks to everyone who contributed here. I got the Steadyracks, have installed them and all working very well. Only thing I'd say to prospective purchasers is don't buy a multi-pack off Amazon. Lots of feedback that they only send one rack even if you buy a multi-pack, and won't send the missing racks (you have to return and re-order). Happened to me too; should have read the reviews.

Slight thread highjack - has anyone mounted the Planet-X cheapy hooks on an angled wedge?

Thinking as the bike will be angled back towards the wall it'll protrude less than if the bracket was flat to the wall.

Quick question. I've got a topeak rack thing that holds two bikes horizontally, one above the other. The handlebars do stick out a bit and it doesn't seem to be the best use of space. Thinking about replacing with steadyracks for four bikes. The one thing that puts me off is the potential for issues with disc brakes when hanging bikes vertically. Does anyone have any issues with that?

No issue at all. I've been hanging bikes vertically for years (using the cheap hooks).

Cheers @scotroutes. Top advice as usual. Might just get a few of these to tidy up the garage a bit.

For those with fatbikes, Park Tool 471 is an oversize bike hook that’ll take a 5” wheel

Had ours hung vertically from the garage wall for as long as I can remember on cheap Decathlon hooks with no problems. They will take up to a 3 inch tyre. Front wheels are hung at 45 deg with rear on the floor. Allows for more bikes as bars are more out of the way
