Hi,

I know there is loads of posts on here about verbier but here's another one. Heading out that general direction for a week and planning to find big singletrack descents. I can't afford to go with a guide and I'm just looking for some advice on trails. Can't find anything on how to find the ultimate trail online so any help with that would be smashing thanks.

Like I say I really can't afford to get a guide so I'm just looking for some route names at the very least so that I can ask the locals to point us in the right direction at least.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Im based in the valley below verbier so anything in the area is good!
Thanks in advance!

Soooo many amazing trails there, and even more and better trails in the surrounding area away from the resort. Ultimate drops off the back of the bowl. You'll need to use a ski lift, then pedal, then carry for 20+ mins, and get a train back from Martigny at the bottom of the trail, assuming you don't get lost (there are some junctions to make choices at, too many for me to remember and explain, soz). Rethink your finances and drop www.bikeverbier.com a line if at all possible - these guys know the area like no one else, and their whole set-up is unbelievably good. If you do DIY, good luck and have fun.

Dont take offense but if your openly asking questions on the internet about big proper trails you can die on if you mess up, youre not really up to getting down it on you're own safely. Try Nuthouse, Vallon D'arby (sp?), Patier and the black marked route over the back.

There's only a couple of exposed bits on Ultimate, and it is 100% rideable - don't see what the problem is with him asking about it and riding it solo, so long as he's a decent, confident rider (not just a trail centre Black route rider) and sensible/careful enough to get off if he's not sure about certain bits.

There are also only a couple of exposed bits and it's all completely rideable on the trail a Dutch tourist fell to his death on in eastern Switzerland last week.

People fall off Snowdon and die, could happen anywhere. Its not the exposed bits on ultimate really, just a big trail with lots of places to mess up- thats all I meant, its up to the individual to assess risk, I remember one year we couldnt ride it due to a big rockfall.

Yeah I get what you are saying. We both ride all moutain bikes and spend most of our time on downhill trails if we aren't doing enduro routes. The alpine environment is very familiar to us and the dangers arent new. Been climbers longer than we've been mountain bikers so navigation also isn't an issue. The reason why we are fine with going without a guide is because we are confident in our abilities as riders and navigators. And I know guides will have a wealth of information to offer but in my opinion I prefer to discover things for myself. The reason why I'm asking openly on the internet is because I obviously don't have any local knowledge as I've not visited the area before and was looking to see if anyone could help. That doesn't really mean I can't go solo just cos I'm looking for some tips!

The word I heard is that the good stuff is tricky to find so maybe some kinda techno gadget guidence system might help. Jackass is worth seeking (I managed it without a guide whilst on a guided ride).
