My trusty pair of AM901s have probably finally died. They're my winter shoes, a size too big so thicker and/or waterproof socks will fit in.
Â
On installing some new cleats, I found that the central rib of the cleat slots has degraded and ripped out of the sole. I've had a think about this and I reckon the shoes are knackered. Even if I pop a little strip of hard plastic in to act as a kind of spacer between the cleat bolts, I still think the cleats are probably not biting into enough stuff that forms a fixed part of the sole. Plus those other contact points are also quite degraded by the look of them.
Â
They're probably eight years old at a minimum and don't owe me anything. But they have stayed in one piece fantastically up until now and are extremely comfortable because of how softened they have become.
Â
So, before, I chuck them out - does anyone have any amazing suggestions for keeping them running. Just asking on the off chance.
You could try with new cleats, but they might rip out.. dunno. Might not though as the cleat nut is a bit larger than the whole slot area so it might have enough support...Â
I would try it on a short local ride.
Maybe try epoxy? With the cleats out loosely put the bolts back in and fill the area with 2-part epoxy but ensure it doesn't cover the bolts too much. Once it has set, remove the bolts and install cleats. Worth a try if you have the epoxy available.

Sounds like they've served you well and it's time for a new pair.

Yes, this is basically the harsh truth. 🤣

Fill with bedding compost, pop in some primroses and stick them on the patio.
