I have a few old tyres and unpatchable tubes so was searching for recycling options and came across the Velorim scheme.
This is a network of recycling points in places like bike shops where you can take your bike tyres and tubes to be recycled.
What surprised me a little was that there are typical charges of 55p per tyre and 25p per tube for this service. My local recycling centre takes car tyres without charging.
Thoughts on this? - mine are that if you buy replacements from the local recycling point - Leisure Lakes in Cheltenham for me - then they should do the recycling for free.
Also how do people on here currently dispose of used tyres and tubes?
yet most car tyre places charge between £2 and £4 to take your old tyre.
I would happily pay just over a quid knowing my tyres are being recycled rather than going into landfill.
Maybe its something you can haggle with if you are purchasing tyres from a place that you intend to recycle your old tyres with.
I havent had to get rid of any old tyres for a while (which is rather odd), but when i do, i will look up who will recycle them and drop them off, so thanks for the link.

This surprises me.. mine don't take car tyres at all and haven't for years.
In any case, it makes sense to recycle bike tyres and it sounds like it will be the norm soon.
Also how do people on here currently dispose of used tyres and tubes?
In a pile at the back of the shed.. just in case they're needed.

That's definitely not the norm. I've had to chop them into small pieces and put them in the household bags before.

The bin because I wasn't aware they were actually recycled.
The problem with a lot of these recycling schemes is unless there's a deposit (the best option) or the price is added on to new ones then very few people will bother.
AA/AAA batteries and vapes are the ones that really annoy me, they're not just recyclable but toxic to the environment if not recycled.
There's always a disposal charger on my garage bill when it has tyres put on it. Bike tyres are a bugger too recycle because they are the same basic structure as a car tyre but contain a fraction of the recoverable materials. I think Schwalbe dealers have an option to offer recycling of tyres and tubes now.
